Review of 'The Day After Tomorrow' DVD.
From the director of Independence Day, Stargate and Godzilla The Day After Tomorrow was first released on DVD in 2004. The movie genre is Sci-Fi/ action/ adventure/ thriller. The film has a run time of 118 minutes and designated a category 12. The DVD is a two disc special edition with a whole host of special features, trailers, commentaries, in depth looks behind the scenes and the special effects. I never watch these to be honest as I find they detract from my enjoyment in the actual movie, therefore I will not pass judgement on this element of the DVD!
Basic plot
the action starts in the first few minutes. Climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid)is drilling for ice samples on an ice shelf when the ice breaks beneath his feet. Jack is almost killed, he returns the America and then travels to India to speak at a conference about Global climatic changes, he fears that a new Ice age is imminent, but he is not believed.
Around the globe dramatic events unfold, a severe hailstorm in Japan, tornadoes in Los Angeles, a tidal wave which threatens to swamp New York City, uncommon water temperatures in Europe all add to Jack's fears, compounding his theory that the climate has gone awry.
Jack has a teenage son, Sam, played by Jake Gyllenhaal . Sam and his friends become stranded in New York due to the increasingly severe weather. Sam manages to speak to his father who warns him to stay put and says that he will rescue him. The plot then follows the tried and trusted 'father racing against time to save his son from adversity' scenario.
Special effects
The Day After Tomorrow has some very good special effects, to see a ship trapped in ice in New York's centre was amazing as were the scenes of the biog freeze creeping towards the city. Now I am no movie buff, I merely watch films for the entertainment value. Some might say that the special effects were a tad overdone, but in my opinion they were fitting for a film of this genre and I certainly enjoyed the movie!
Cast, characters, price and availability
**Main cast** Dennis Quaid Jake Gyllenhaal Ian Holm Emmy Rossum Sela Ward
The characters depicted in the movie were well rounded and believable. Dennis Quaid was an excellent choice for the lead role of Jack Hall and although the plot was a little predictable in parts, Quaid made the film for me!
Marketed as a Hollywood blockbuster this DVD is definitely worth a viewing. My copy was purchased in a garden centre, of all places, for a bargain £2.50 on a buy two DVD's for a fiver deal. The DVD is available from Play.com for £7.99 or from Amazon.co.uk at £6.98 new or from 65p used.
My Thoughts and Conclusion
The movie did feature scenes of extended peril and the 12 rating was justified in my opinion. Overall I enjoyed this DVD and would certainly watch it again. The plot and the special effects were appropriate for the genre of movie and the theme of climatic change running through the plot was certainly thought provoking. Whilst I am sure that an ice age of this magnitude will not occur in my lifetime, it does make you realise how devastating a climatic change of this magnitude would be for the world. I would recommend this DVD to others as one of those films you must see, even if only once!
Summary: A good film with great special effects, believable characters and a strong cast.

I loved this film and have got it on DVD. It's one of those films that you can watch over and over again and I have. It kept me rivetted to the edge of my sofa. Makes wonder what would happen in that senario. Will have to get it out again to watch. :-)

I quite enjoyed the movie. A step away from all the boring "seen so many times before" slash-fests Hollywood has been churning out the past few years.
