***PLOT***
Global Warming. We are taught about it in schools, taught to recycle and not to burn fossil fuels, but the majority of the time, we just take no notice and now in this movie Dr. Jack Hall is the only one who seems to realise this.
The movie begins with Jack and two team members working on collecting samples of ice and rock from the Anartic. All of a sudden, what feels like a deep earthquake rumbles and splits the massive section of ice that they are standing on. After Jack and his team mates escape unscathed, Jack starts to investigate the cause and what he finds leads to a starting revelation.
Due to the effects of global warming, the polar ice caps are melting. As a result, all the now melted cold water is going into the ocean - the North Atlantic Current to be more specific and causing the temperature to drop dramatically. This is a discovery made by Terry Rapson, a scientist, who keeps an eye on the North Atlantic current and the temperature. After consulting with Jack, both come to the same conclusion. As a result of such a major drop in the temperature of the ocean, the world is now on the verge of a major climate shift for the worse. The weather will just get rapidly worse, culminating in one of the worst storms in history and the beginning of a new ice age.
Jack's son Sam, a bright kid who joins a Decatholon team, flies to New York with his team mates to compete in a competion. Unfortunately, as tidal waves hit the city, everything in site freezes and Sam and his team are forced into the New York public library with no hope of escape until the storm has passed. When he finally gets into contact with his father, Jack vows to brave the storm to find his son.
The only option for the world, is to head south for warmer climates. If the people living in the north hemisphere stay where they are and go outside, the storm will kill them, if the other rapid weather changes don't first.
If you want to know what happens, then watch the film people! It's great!
***MY PERSONAL OPINION***
I thought this was fantastic! I've never watched a film that was based on the effects of global warming. I saw a trailer for this movie when I was at the cinema, waiting for something else to come on. I was immediately interested and impressed by the trailer and the special effects and it was only on for 30 seconds! I never got the chance to see it at the cinema, so my mom got this film on the single disc edition for me to watch! I was thrilled and sat down to watch it.
I was absolutely mesmerised by the whole thing. Not so much because of the characters, but by the story and the special effects. The story really hit home to me about the effects of global warming and although nothing like this has happened to us yet, it does make me wonder if it will.
The special effects were completely out of this world. I've never seen anything like it. Huge tornados, hail storms the size of footballs and walls of water hurtling towards New York just intensified how serious the whole problem was in the film and totally amazed me. It's astounding how much effort has gone into these special effects and the CGI department has outdone themselves here. Unfortunately, seeing all these weather problems came as a sharp reminder of the tsunami disaster that happened on Boxing Day and how cruel mother nature can really be. At the end of the day, we may live on this planet, but there is nothing to stop it lashing out at us.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not about to go and join a Greenpeace petition boat, but I just felt sad when it reminded me of the disaster.
As for the actors and actresses, I found them pretty unremarkable. I was so entranced by the special effects that I didn't really take much notice. The special effects just made the film for me and to be honest, it is the only single thing that keeps you tense and excited thoughout the whole movie.
Overall the acting was of a reasonable standard, Dennis Quaid putting in a reasonable performance as a panic-stricken dad searching for his son. For his age, Quaid looks pretty good. Like a leather jacket, some things just get better with age.
I have to admit, that the only thing I have seen Jake Gyllenhaal in was bubble boy. Brother to Maggie Gyllenhall who was in Mona Lisa Smile, these two aren't exactly on the A list but Jake has been in Bubble Boy. It's the only other thing I've seen him in actually! His performance was again reasonable but not memorable.
Ian Holm, one of the characters in the Lord of the Rings films, seemed like a good choice for a slightly goofy british scientist but you don't see too much of him in this movie. It seems like he could have done something more worthy of his acting skills, but alas, each to his own!
I'm giving this film a 4 out of 5. Reason this movie doesn't get the full 5 stars is because of the characters unmemorable perfomances!
However, as much as I loved it, like other Ciao members, the critics happened to think this was a huge flop! That's silly! Here's what a couple thought.
"[Emmerich] crams the film with enough digital wizardry to make you wish he had jettisoned the script altogether and simply paraded the visual effects with chapter titles such as Snow Over New Delhi and The Hollywood Sign Gets Totaled." Jan Stuart, NEWSDAY
"A classic, big-budget studio movie about widespread, dramatic, hand-of-God destruction and the few hardy characters who, to our satisfaction, improbably survive is no place for serious hectoring about the Antarctic ice shelf." Lisa Schwarzbaum, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
"The only truly scary thing about this doomsday popcorn flick is the momumental ineptitude of the acting, writing and directing." Peter Travers, ROLLING STONE
Well there you have it! Personally, I think they're being a bit harsh but I'll leave it up to you to decide!

Advantages: Great special effects and good interesting characters. Disadvantages: I wasn't to keen on the ending and also felt that some things were cut out.
