I have read many other people's reviews and many of the comments include 'poor acting', 'not very realistic' and 'a shabby plot'.
But I think if you look at the directors aim of this particular movie, i don't think that the quality of the acting was meant to be ( not to be insulting) in line with the acting or 'realism' of many hollywood movies and their stars. Lord of the Rings was a fantastic film and has been recognised as so because of the special effects and the vast crew that have put together the film. It is great in that the plot was already provided by an author which had to be transferred on to film. that particular movie was highly fantastical, about good combating evil. The Day after Tomorrow, addresses the very realistic issue which we 'ourselves' have created- pollution. No Im not a raving Green Party looney but recently my attention has been brought to these issues. particularlt by the film. i think the
director has done an excellent job in showing how our misuse and encouragment of the abuse of our plant can result in the very fast deterioration of our planet, civilisationa and livelihood.
Characters.... The characters of the movie are perhaps as realistic as they can be. Do you honestly know how you would react to a situation? Our sense of idealism can often overcome our true perceptions of how we would react to a situationa dn in some cases we never know until we face them. Look at the Second World War and ourselves in everyday situations. Most of us feel thatconflicts should be resolved peacefully and this is what we teach our children, that it is 'bad' to fight. but we do it ourselves. The Second World War resulted due to the break down of negotiations and as for Iraq- can we honestly say that americas and the UKs response to 9/11 was a result of an exhausted peaceful process? I don't think that we can. The characters thus in my opinion thus relate to the situation at hand and i think that they reflect the various possible emotions and dangers which may be incurred in such a dilemma. There is always someone who wants to be a hero, hence the encouragment of people to try and make a hasty unprepared escape regardless of the warnings. Someone who believes that civilisation is fabulous even after the dire consequences of that civilisation surround him. The guy that plays the son of the weather guy ( main character) is the main actor from Donnie Darko. I didn't like him in that movie as the movie itself was rather disturbing until the end, but I think here as a new actor on the scene, he was cast perfectly. in fact I think that of the whole film. The novelty of the situation was reflected in the freshness of the new actors as they are unknown to teh public and thus do not bring the charcter baggaes of othe past roles such as jennifer Aniston ie Jennifer Anniston (Rachel from friends) or Keanu Reeves (Neo from the Matrix). You see when mentioning such actors, you do instantly think of their most famous role that they have played and have thus compared their acting in new roles to old ones.
Soundtrack.... hmm I feel really bad- i can't remeber it at the moment. I will go and search for it and tell what i think at a later date. Sorry.
Special Effects... In terms of creating an Ice Storm and an Ice Age- brilliant. Very similar effects to XMen when the guy who can freeze people turns the guy on the trip to a musem into a frozen statue. but there are no earth shattering new effects such as that which was used in MATRIX- bullet time shooting.
Plot... The story line is not intrinsic and yes its very predictable. It is about the world bcoming engulfed in three huge ice storms which produce a similar effect tot hat of an ice age in the upper hemisphere of the world. Naturally there's a predictor of this traumatic event who is ignored by government officials. In turn his predictions become true and his loved ones get trapped (just his son) in New york city, thus the weather forecast guy goes with three friend to save his son- one dies along the way and well- hey you need to watch the film to know the rest. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. thank you for reading this review.
