The Dark Knight is the latest Batman film to hit our screens, involving Batman's fight to save Gotham city from the Joker's crime wave, whilst also trying as Bruce Wayne to push Harvey Dent as the cities new major Having watched Batman Begins again recently we decided to watch The Dark knight whilst it was fresh in out minds as this follows on, it would have been called ‘Batman Continues’ but that doesn’t sound and where near as exciting !
As with Batman Begins. Brue Wayne and his alter ego Batman are well played by Christian Bale, this time he is trying to save Gotham City from the evil clutches of The Joker played the excellent and sadly now deceased Heath Ledger. He is assisted by the new mayor of Gotham City, Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) a man with strong views and morals. The main supporting cast from Batman begins is there too with Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox (who is now CEO of Wayne Enterprises) and Michael Caine as the ever faithful Alfred the butler.
The full plot is quite complex so I am not even going to attempt to describe it. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the plot moving, some great clever and funny one liners and plenty of action from start to finish but again there are some softer moments to keep the balance and help the film work on a few levels.
Much has been written about Heath Ledgers performance as The Joker since his death and I must agree he is excellent, bringing the role make it feel truly deranged but yet clever and calculating. All of the other parts are also played very well making all the relationships work throughout the film.
The special effects are also great and have been done very well they merge in almost seamlessly. The new bat suit worn by Bale looks good and The Jokers face makeup has also been very cleverly done, it is thin in some places so the skin shows through, not perfectly covered as in many other Batman movies which is far more realistic and somehow add as creapyness to it.
The film really is dark in places but is officially rated 12a but there is no swearing and not actually that much gore, it runs for just over 2 and a ½ hours but doesn’t feel that long which is a testament to the quality of it.
The only slight disappointment is the soundtrack which is virtually non existent, a good strong soundtrack would have finished it off nicely however all in all this is a great film that I would recommend all action film fans must see.
