Having loved the first film, Batman Begins, I was very eager to see The Dark Knight, and even more so after seeing the trailers and the reviews that it received. I waited until the initial frenzy of the opening few weeks had died down a bit, and eventually went to see it recently.
The Dark Knight is set shortly after Batman Begins. Batman (Christian Bale), Detective Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) have successfully locked away many on the criminals off the streets of Gotham City. The remaining few crime lords are approached by a new psychopathic, anarchist, criminal mastermind known as the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers to rid them of their biggest threat .. Batman.
Batman, Gordon and Dent must work against the clock to find and capture the Joker, as with each day that passes, the Joker unleashes wave after wave of anarchistic mayhem. The Joker will stop at nothing as Gotham's leading figures begin to fall one by one, whilst Batman struggles to contain the force of the Joker, who ultimately has targeted Batman death as the final piece in his jigsaw.
A lot was emphasized and made of Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker, because of his death, but the performance really was breathtaking. When you see his performance in this movie, it really hits home how much of a waste the taking of his life was. I cannot praise the performance enough, he was brilliantly scary, funny, annoying and loveable, all at the same time. Christian Bale was excellent as Batman, as he was in the first movie, but Heath Ledger definitely stole the show in this film.
The Dark Knight was an excellent movie, action packed from start to finish, with lots of excellent stunts and special effects. The movie is quite long, about two and a half hours in fact, but due to the nature of the film, at no point did I feel like the time had dragged at any point.
A lot has also been said of the violence in the movie, and to be fair, this film has certainly increased the violence level in Batman films to a new level. It is surprising that this movie is only rated a 12 certificate, I would have certainly have thought it to be worthy of a 15 certificate. Despite the violence and the seriousness of the film causing much debate, I personally enjoyed the film much more because of it. This is definitely mu favourite Batman film of them all, the films have become much more realistic, which I personally feel is better.
This is a film not to be missed in my opinion, whether you want to see it because you enjoyed the first film, or whether it's just to see Heath Ledgers farewell performance, either way you can't fail not to love this film.
