INTRO

You must always start your reviews of superhero movies with the clarification that if you're not actually a huge comic book reader, you probably don't really know that much about the characters. Otherwise you're likely to cause offence to those who are comic book readers, and judge the movies for not being relevant or true to the way the story is supposed to pan out. Unfortunately, I'm not the right person to ask if you want to know anything along the lines of what happened in issue #278, but what I do know is that if DC Comics translate to the big screen anywhere near as well as Marvel have in recent years - Batman, or more specifically 'The Dark Knight' is a movie I want to see.

On the other hand, it's not really like director, Christopher Nolan, needs my approval as with the hype you shall already know what he has created is the movie of the year. Possibly the superhero movie of the decade. As of July 29th 2008, 'The Dark Knight' has already grossed over $333 million, making it the most successful box office release of all time - beating off other cult followings for the movies such as 'Star Wars' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. I have also seen 'The Dark Knight' be described as being greater than all three 'Spider-Man' movies combined. Now I was a huge fan of Peter Parker in his trilogy of movies, but Bruce Wayne has certainly opened up a new darker side to superhero movies that could have easily seen the movies 12A age certificate being pushed up a few years, at least.

Without doing the movie a disservice, it has to also be noted that the movie has garnered most attention not because Batman is such an exciting character, but as this is the last entire movie that the late Heath Ledger managed to complete. More on that later.

STORY

Anyone that saw 'Batman Begins' will know that with that reinvention to the series came a new element to the movie that did away with the comedic sidekicks, the pop-up sound effects and the supreme dominance of one character over all his 'experiment gone wrong' enemies. Spiderman take note. Reintroducing Batman with a backstory of how he overcame his fear of bats to return to Gotham City in a bid to clean up the place was the best move Nolan could have taken back in 2003, and the calling card of The Joker being left at the end of the movie for Batman to 'investigate' was just one of the factors that had people lapping up a sequel.

You may have heard that the movie opens with an incredibly entertaining bank robbery scene, although I would call that a bit of an over exaggaration and compared to what follows in the next 150 minutes will have you disregarding that scene. The Joker is out in full force, and his various henchmen aiding his robbery in clown masks shall have the kids terrified and peering from behind seats already, so do the rest of the movie-goers a favour and do not take young children to The Dark Knight. They are unlikely to follow the storyline, or enjoy the violence, and judging from the age range in the showing I watched last night it doesn't seem that it is the 12A audience that is lining the pockets of the third movie - it's those that do not figid in a seat after an hour.

A bank robbery is not going to be simple in Gotham City, and this just so happens to be a 'mob bank' leading to one member of staff fighting back (Mahone, the druggie cop from Prison Break). The Joker is not interested in the money though, and simply did what he did because he could and to catch the attention of the mob. Crime is on the decrease due to the good work of Batman, and that is why The Joker offers the mobs the proposition of killing Batman for half of the mobs dirty money. Because if you're good at something, you don't do it for free.

Meanwhile, the face of the recovering Gotham City is Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) who as district attorney is hailed as the 'White Knight'. He throws himself into the face of danger for the sake of his campaign, but something about him has the aura of a bad guy that doesn't seem to develop. Of course if you are a comic book reader you will know all about Harvey Dent, who never leaves anything to chance and even has a coin with a head on either side to symbolise this. Perhaps the dislike for the character stems from his proposal to Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal), who the audience believe should be with Bruce Wayne.

One criticism that I have heard of the movie is that the transitions between scenes are not smooth, and I can relate to that - one minute you may have a dark action sequence, and before you know it you may be blinded by the bright white of the underground bunker that Bruce (Christian Bale) and Alfred (Michael Caine) are working from. Understandably, some scenes were perhaps cut out for the purposes of not dragging out the movie any longer than need be, and although there is no scene at the beginning to say, "Hello, I'm Batman, welcome to my movie," I saw the movie with people that have not watched 'Batman Begins' and they had no problem understanding what was going on. Perhaps the only confusion may have been with the cameo from Scarecrow, who was the villian in the last movie.

The Joker is a man with nothing to lose, and that is what makes the movie so modern. Not arroused by the idea of all the money he could be making, Joker is a terrorist that has decided he wants to undo all the good work done to Gotham City. And after Batman goes abroad on a bounty hunter mission to bring back that accountant rat that can testify against every last member of the mobs, the criminals of the city realise that they have no choice but to work with Joker in order to secure their freedom. The Dark Knight certainly has his work cut out, working with James Gordon (Gary Oldman), one of the last few cops not corrupted, and Lucious Fox (Morgan Freeman), the technology in the movie is advanced yet remains realistic.

OPINION

Batman has turned dark and disturbing, and the fact that the movie does not even choose to use the superheros name in the title of the movie, rather his alter ego, proves that The Dark Knight is further away from 'Batman Forever' than you ever thought you might get. Although Christian Bale has recently been named and shamed as a suspect for assaulting his mother and sister, those tabloid stories are the last thing you'll be thinking about during the movie -- perhaps after you may mention how they were clearly just after his money at the highest point of his career. Whilst I do not rate Bale as the best actor going, his performance and Bruce Wayne is faultless, and it will be interesting to see how this hot property acts out another high-profile character as John Connor in next years big movie, 'Terminator Salvation'.

Maggie Gyllenhaal does no damage taking over the role of Rachel from Katie Holmes, although I was a little surprised to hear they are changing a lead female role so soon into the new series of Batman movies. Clearly the opinion must be that Batman's romance is not as key to the movie as say, Mary-Jane and Peter Parker's romance. That can only be a good thing, when you consider the main characteristic to a superhero movie should be the action. A confident portrayal of the law student, and a casting choice not made on appearance alone.

Before I move on to the big acting opinion, I have to say how happy I was to see not only a 'Prison Break' actor in the movie but also a 'Lost' actor! Nestor Carbonell takes on the role of the Mayor of Gotham City. Good times.

Everyones been waiting to hear if an Oscar shall be coming to Heath Ledger for his portryal of the Joker, and considering I only knew him as the guy from 'Brokeback Mountain' before his death I can see how my current fanatically review of him could be associated with the whole, 'you care about people more after they're dead'. My main thoughts were towards, perhaps Ledger wasn't such a great actor but the script he had been handed was just out of this world. I was hanging off every last word that came out of Joker's mouth, and you never knew what the modern day terrorist was going to do next. I even felt that there were elements of the 'Saw' killer, 'Jigsaw', in the movie as he played various games with Batman.

Described as a "psychopathic, mass murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy" would correctly sum up why The Joker has suddenly became possibly the best superhero villian of all time. And in turn, has came to make Batman the best superhero franchise going. I could quite happily sit through another movie featuring Batman's chase of The Joker, but due to the circumstances perhaps the character should just be locked away as someone that should never be seen on screen again. Ledger perfected every last detail of his character, and not only were his movements a joy to watch but also the way his make-up changed depending on what sort of situation he was. I guess that's a shout out to the make-up team behind the movie who certainly knew how to create some scars.

Perhaps it was living alone, looking in the mirror, and deciding how to play this role is what sent Heath Ledger suicidal. Accidental drug overdose, or whatever, it's criminal that Ledger will never be able to see what impact he made on the cinema injury during summer 2008. Perhaps Joker wasn't the only one chasing the car, and not knowing what to do with it when he caught up.

"It was tremendously emotional, right when he passed, having to go back in and look at him every day," Nolan recalled. "But the truth is, I feel very lucky to have something productive to do, to have a performance that he was very, very proud of, and that he had entrusted to me to finish."
