The Da Vinci Code was probably one of the most controversial books of the modern day and so the movie was always going to be eagerly anticipated. The book was written by Dan Brown and was an international bestseller. I've read the book and really really enjoyed it and was excited above the movie. Of course, the subject matter is very controversial and although it is meant to be somewhat fictional I can see elements of truth in it.
The film version of the book was released in 2006. It pretty much follows the story of the book which I like and hasn't strayed too far away from the story which is nice. Tom Hanks stars as Robert Langdon, a professor of Symbology. He is the main character of the movie as it's up to him to solve the riddles and ultimately save himself. I like Tom Hanks in this. There's no doubting that he's a great actor but he definitely brings a fresh approach to this role. When I first heard that he was going to play this part in the movie after reading the book I wasn't so sure that they had got the casting right. From reading the book I had always imagined Robert to be a bit sexier than Tom Hanks but in the end I think he played a somewhat likeable guy who is intelligent without being a complete beef cake! The role is quite physical and demanding and he manages to pull it off well, keeping up but still playing a professor who probably doesn't get into as many situations as Robert finds himself in this adventure.
The basic story sees Robert trying to solve a murder mystery with the help of cryptologist Sophie Neveu, played by Audrey Tautou. She has a personal interest in the case and wants and needs to get to the bottom of everything. Their journey sees them travel from Paris, to London and there are some great scenes in both countries. They go to a lot of building and touristy places of interest and it's nice to see all of these on screen. Audrey Tautou is also good. She provides a bit of eye candy for the guys and because she is actually French see brings the real character to life.
The story line is really interesting and really makes you think at times. Obviously Dan Brown has done a lot of research into his subject matter but what I really like is that he explains some of the reasons behind everyday things that we now take for granted. Most of all I really liked all the symbology and interesting facts in the book which were carried over well into the movie.
Other actors in this movie include Sir Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina and Paul Bettany so it's a really great cast. Paul Bettany is really haunting as Silas, the Albino killer. He is so realistic and his scenes of torture are really quite painful to watch.
The DVD is rated 12 as it contains flagellation and other moderate violence and runs for approximately 2 hours and 22 minutes.
