Dan Brown’s sensational book “The Da Vinci Code” doesn’t need introductions. Since it has been publish in 2003, it became a worldwide bestseller, generated discussions, and impelled a shock wave among the Christian community putting historians, religious scholars, and genealogists after clues to confirm or deny what the book states to be “Roman Catholic Church’s biggest lie”: That Mary Magdalene was married to Jesus Christ and from this union a daughter, a royal descendant was born. Christ’s divinity is questioned, and the search for the Holy Grail is attributed not to the search of a cup but to Mary Magdalene’s daughter and her descendants.
From the bookstores to the movie screen, only took three years and whoever had the opportunity to read the book recognize a natural cinematographic language and an addictive suspense construction, with the style of the greatest suspense classics.
Is up to Ron Howard to direct the most desired work of the past few years and it’s not an easy job. How is it possible to supplant the surprise element created in the book?
For those who read the book, the movie is no more than a visual illustration of every chapter where little or nothing was left behind. The surprise element and the suspense are dismantled. Responsible for the screenplay adaptation Akiva Goldsman has his job eased, Ron Howard, don’t...
Honestly, the book is a “gigantic spoiler” for this movie. However, the problem is not what we already know from the book, but the way how the director works the resources he has. I have a long sympathy for Ron Howard, (“Far and Away” (1992), “Apollo 13” (1995), “A Beautiful Mind” (2001)) and in this movie he is out of his natural environment, adapting a book that is an ode to the suspense genre.
One way or the other (If you read the book or not), the movie brings three extra values: The extraordinary visual construction, the musical excellence of Hans Zimmer, and a luxurious cast that fits perfectly on the characters created by Dan Brown.
American professor and symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is at a colloquium in Paris when is approached by Captain Bezu Fache (Jean Reno) that requests his assistance to solve a murder that hides a message. It’s here that, with the help of cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), the quest to solve “Mankind’s greatest secret”, the source of God’s power on earth, begins. As closer they get to the truth, the bigger the conspiracy becomes…
Langdon looks like the opposite of Indiana Jones, diffident, claustrophobic, allergic to excitement, and has as his bullwhip and fedora, his tweed jacket. Shares with Indiana Jones the same History addiction, and agreeing completely with the choice of Hanks for the role, I regret that he didn’t take advantage of his comic potential to better define the character Langdon.
Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno, and Ian McKellen (Sir Leigh Teabing) incarnate their characters with great perfection, but is for Paul Bettany the laurels of dote on the “lethal” albino monk Silas with the sensuality of a fallen angel.
Without surprise, the controversy spread (as the censure), the debate is on fire, and the religious institutions still haven’t calmed down…

I've heard both good and bad comments about this film. I've actually read the book and do have a copy of the dvd but haven't got around to watching it yet - will try to do so during half-term break - good review again x

I think there is something wrong with me! The more hype a film gets the less I want to watch it which means I'm not interested in this at all! Good review though!
