Very curious indeed!

I had high hopes for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Firstly Brad Pitt was in it (how could it possibly be anything but great) and secondly it has been nominated for so many awards that I was really looking forward to seeing it. Unfortunately, although I found it good, it?s not a film I would go and see again and would not really describe it as a classic in my opinion.

The film is a love story, that much is certain, a love story across the years, dealing mostly with loss and love that survives the years. It is also about lost and found relationships and friendships across the ages. I think the reason why I didn?t love it is because to me nothing really happened, the film just sort of moved along with nothing much to the story and at times dragged a bit I thought and was probably a little bit too long. At one stage my husband and I turned to each other and just sort of felt a bit bored. That?s not to say however that the film was not wonderfully made and well presented.

The story is actually based on a short story of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It?s November 11th 1918 and the First World War has just ended. Amidst all the celebrations a new baby is making his way into the world but all is not well. As his mother dies in childbirth, he father makes the shocking discovery that his appearance is unbelieveable, he looks exactly like an old man, wrinkles and everything! He instantly makes the snap decision not to keep the baby and leaves it on a strangers doorstep.

That doorstep belongs to Queenie, a lady who runs a nursing home and she names him Benjamin. This is where Benjamin spends his early years. I enjoyed these scenes in the nursing home as it was nice to see him forming friendships with all the old people and how his mother treated him exactly the same as if he had been a ?normal? child. What I did find strange was the fact that no one questioned why he was like that and why he seemed to be getting younger with every passing year. I know he had grown up there and they saw it with their own eyes but there was never a mention of this extraordinary event that was taking place before them.

This story, set in the early 1900?s, runs parallel with the story Daisy is telling her daughter in present day. Daisy is old and on her death bed in a hospital and her daughter is reading extracts from a diary. We soon discover that the diary once belonged to Benjamin and it is his life being set out, with Daisy as one of the reoccurring themes in his life.

Benjamin first meets Daisy when she is just a child and he is old but they have an instant bond that proves unbreakable. Their love is unusual but true and quite touching at times.

Benjamin is played by Brad Pitt. He has received a Best Actor nomination for his role in this movie. I thought he was good but in my opinion it was not a good enough performance to win an Oscar. He does look great in the movie too and most of that I guess is down to the costume department. The old version of Brad is just amazing and the fact that they managed to make him look small and old at the same time was quite unbelieveable. Obviously when he is first born he is small and they needed to make him appear like a boy with old skin and bones and that is just what they were able to do.

Cate Blanchett plays Daisy. She was really great in this role and quite alluring. I thought the parts when she was young she just looked absolutely amazing. Her skin was glowing and flawless and she looked really beautiful. She ages during the movie too and again looks great with wrinkles and it?s all again down to the costume department. She plays a dancer in this film and really had some great moves and looked very competent.

Like I said there show of love was great but at times I was quite annoyed at the way things turned out between them. I was happy with the way their love ended though and pleased it did go like that.

The film has appeared on many top ten lists of 2008 and as of February 2009 the film has grossed $241,645,000 worldwide.
