I remember watching The Craft at a friend’s sleepover when I was at school and thinking it was the coolest film ever! When I watched it again a few nights ago I thought the same thing.
The Plot
Sarah has moved to Los Angeles in an unwilling move with her family. She starts school at St. Benedict’s Academy and learns within a few hours of being there that there is a certain pecking order to this school and she has a choice where to be.
She tries to fit in with the ‘cool’ crowd but ends up being friends with Nancy, Bonnie and Rochelle all of whom are outcasts in the school and are commonly known as the Bitches of Eastwick. They all practice a witchcraft that works on the basis of being aware of everything around you but is known by the name of ‘Manon’ – Sarah becomes part of this group and becomes the forth tower (north, south, east and west) that allows them to perform more serious magic.
All of the girls have their own separate problems that they wish to solve. Nancy hates the man who is married to her mother and is fed up of being trailer trash, Rochelle is black and is fed up with one particular girl who is a racist and makes her life hell, Bonnie has 1st degree burn scars all over her body and wants them to go away so she can wear short skirts and tops like the rest of the group. Sarah’s problems in comparison are rather small – she really likes a classmate called Chris and just wants him to love her.
One day they make all these spells and there requests start to come true – Chris won’t leave Sarah’s side, Nancy’s mothers boyfriend has a heart attack and dies leaving the hundreds of thousands of dollars in a life insurance policy, Rochelle’s racist classmate starts to loose her beautiful blonde hair and Bonnie’s scars literally peel away one day.
However all cannot be happy they are advised that they will pay threefold for the work they have done and things start to happen to them. Nancy goes crazy with power and starts to freak Sarah out who soon realises that she has to stop her and it ends in an amazing battle for power between the two of them.
This film is not Harry Potter so there is no happy joyous moment- this is people fighting with curses and practicing black magic and fighting evil.
I can’t really write anymore as it will totally spoil the plot and you have to watch it yourself without knowing what is coming.
Details
The film was released in 1996 and was directed by Andrew Fleming. The parts in the film are played by:
Robin Tunney - Sarah Bailey Fairuza Balk - Nancy Downs Neve Campbell - Bonnie Rachel True - Rochelle Skeet Ulrich - Chris Cooper
The best performances come from Sarah Bailey and Fairuza Balk as they both portray good and evil amazingly well. The film is rated 15 and doesn’t seem worth the rating until the last 20 minutes when things can get a little squeamish if you don’t like spiders, roaches and snakes.
For Me
I think this is a good film that I regret not seeing at the cinema when it came out. Fairuza Bulk makes a fantastic witch and is thoroughly convincing in her role, Robin Tunney seems a little weak at the start but as her character progresses she gets stronger.
All in all it’s a goodie worth renting or buying, you can buy it from Amazon at the moment for the bargain price of £7.97.

Advantages: Shows the struggle some kids go through today in schools, good effects for the time. Disadvantages: Bit too over-streached, typical "American, school, teen" film

Review of The Craft (DVD)
Advantages: the original MlP concept, wonderful performances by Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman, Disadvantages: poorly executed DVD release, no extras, unsuitable for children over 9, appeals mainly to girls only
