I remember watching this when it first came out on VCR so it must have been about 1997 (making me a sweet, inocent 14), when I was going through a spurt of wanting to be different so this was the "must see film" for me and my friends.
It's basically about a teenage girl who moves house with her parents and so in affect moves high school too. When she gets there she has a tough time fitting in as most teenagers would do and gets together with 3 outcasts of the school. One who just want to be different, one who has burns/scars from childhood and one, who feels threatened as she is the only black pupil in the school. So as you can imagine, they all feel threatened and different and so together make an unbreakable group of friends. They themselves are looking for a fourth member to add to their coven to complete the cirlce.
At 14 I did really enjoy the film as the "cool" (at that time) effects and the idea of magic, getting the boys you wanted, revenge on the popular kids and being pretty, where what nearly every kid would want. As well as wanting to fit in.
Th film follows the girls as they progress through their magic time, learning new skills and using them to their advantage or against people and(...the moral of the story is....)how getting everything you want can turn back on you.
The end of the film is quite enjoyable (not for those who are scared of bugs), but does seem to drag on a little.
The film at the time seemed pretty unique to me, but after watching it again last year, it falls into the typical "American teen high school" film. One thing I did notice though was it shows even 7 yrs ago it was normal that kids get a tough time in school.
I'd say at the end of the day it is worth watching maybe even buying but its not the kind of film that would be watched often and as I said before seems to be a bit too long for the storyline, at the end of the day though I think with films and music it is down to personal taste....we all know what we like.
I had a quick look on the Net on a couple of sites that I use myself for buying DVDs and found the prices are about on average £10 (£7-cheapest) for DVD and £5 for video.
Happy watchin.....Maybe???
