one created his successful Play album using old field recordings of blues and folk artists, so Brill has used a stash of 78rpm recordings of cantors singing various prayers as the basis of this record. Brill has sampled these melodic and evocative recordings and worked them into some rich fourth world/ambient music which. At its best The Covenant is reminiscent of The Orb at their most coherent: a crisp, clean mash of laid-back beats, polished ambience and carefully placed samples. Elsewhere, Brill's Californian roots come to the New Agey fore; the guitar solos are a tad pat while the recitations from the books of Hollywood guru Deepak Chopra might not be to everyone's taste. These are small quibbles, though. The Covenant plays the easy-on-the-ear ambient game perfectly, putting an extraordinary, relatively unknown music tradition into an invigorating and intriguing modern sound. --Robert Heller

Looking at how others have rated the film however I think I may be on my own. Ok I have to admit that the story is a little far-fetched but what do you expect from a supernatural action thriller. Personally I really enjoyed the film, I can't say it's one of my favourite ever films but it is certainly something I would watch again.
The Covenant tells the story of four young students in Massachusetts, known as the Brothers of Ipswich, are joined by their sacred ancestry and powers are nearing the age, 18, where they will receive powers that are far greater than those they currently hold. The powers however come with an exceptionally high price, as each time they are used they take away a little bit of their life an subsequently age them.
These four students however are not the stat of this magical line, they are merely descendents of five families of the Ipswich colony, who united by their untold power formed a covenant of silence in 1692. One of these families however had higher ambitions and a lust for power and was banished from the covenant. Their bloodline disappeared without trace. Without trace that is until now…
Initially the arrival a new boy in town does not arouse suspicions among the boys, as problems within their group lead them to believe the strange happenings are merely the work of Reid, who they suspect is merely jealous of Caleb, who'll be ascending first. As the truth however comes to the forefront secrets held close start to unravel and friends and family are placed in danger it becomes all too apparent that the power hunger family is back, and that they're back for revenge. Caleb, as the most powerful amongst them, must do everything he can to ensure that the covenant of silence that has protected their families for hundreds of years remains intact.
This film is mystical and magical from the very start. The settings are simply amazing and add a real tense atmosphere to the film as a whole. The delicate lighting and unusual yet effective camera shots tells the audience exactly what they should be looking at and exactly what they should think. In this way the film has you under a spell and pulls you into the magical yet somewhat scary world in which the characters live.
The special effects are also executed perfectly. They are shot in a way that makes the 'magic' effects seem believable and real. The actors themselves also do all of the stunts that you see within the film and in this way the reactions you see are all completely real, which adds another dimension to the film. These stunts are aided by the superb soundtrack, which increases and decreases the tempo and pace of he film at exactly the right point in order to have maximum effect.
The actors themselves are all somewhat unknowns and I think this works to the films advantage, as although Caleb (Steven Strait) seems to be the most important character all of the others have an immensely important role to play. By using 'unknowns' the balance between the characters is kept at the right level and no one character seems to steal the show. Another point to note is that all of the main characters look different, although they are all very good looking (an added bonus in my opinion), and so from the start you are clear as to who is who and what their role is. This is again a very clever device used by the director as it ensures that even if we do not understand the world that they live in we can at least understand who they are.
Now this is the second film that I have seen in the new Blu-Ray format and to be perfectly honest I'm not that impressed, as I can't really seem to see much of a difference. Maybe this is just me, maybe I'm not looking hard enough and getting too wrapped up in the action of the film to notice but I can't seem to see what all the fuss is about. Ok the picture is clear and crisp and the sound pristine but then a lot of my DVD's are like this. In my opinion therefore the Blu-Ray edition of this film is nothing special but it isn't any worse than a simple DVD edition and so I wouldn't particularly recommend one over the other.
I would however highly recommend the Covenant as a film to anyone who likes light action thrillers, as this is certainly a tense drama of a film.
The sons of Ipswich are legendary at Spenser Academy, a New England boarding school. Handsome and popular, these four teenage friends can trace their roots to the founding families of the Ipswich Colony, settled in the late 1600s. For years these Massachusetts families have harboured the secret that they possess supernatural powers. Their descendants have inherited magical powers that first manifested themselves when the boys turned 13 years old. In a nutshell, they can do anything. As they approach their 18th birthdays, they are preparing to 'ascend', which means their powers will grow stronger. The downside? The magic is seductive and addictive, and causes premature aging with each use.

DVD Description
Renny Harlin (DIE HARD 2, DEEP BLUE SEA) directs this supernatural thriller about descendants of powerful New England families. The sons of Ipswich are legendary at Spenser Academy, the local boarding school. Handsome and popular, these four teenage friends can trace their roots to the founding families of the Ipswich Colony, settled in the late 1600s. For years these Massachusetts families have harboured the secret that they possess supernatural powers. Their descendants--Caleb (Steven Strait), Reid (Toby Hemingway), Tyler (Chace Crawford), and Pogue (Taylor Kitsch)--have inherited magical powers that first manifested themselves when the boys turned 13 years old. In a nutshell, they can do anything. As they approach their 18th birthdays, they are preparing to 'ascend', which means their powers will grow stronger. The downside? The magic is seductive and addictive, and causes premature aging with each use. Ringleader Caleb tries to keep his friends from using magic recklessly, but as the school year begins, strange events and a strong gut instinct convince Caleb that someone is using very powerful magic. Meanwhile, Caleb is exploring his newfound affection for transfer student Sarah (Laura Ramsey). To Caleb’s dismay, Sarah becomes a pawn in a power struggle with a descendant of the fifth founding family of Ipswich, a line thought to be lost during Salem’s witch trials. Is Caleb strong enough to maintain his power and keep his family and friends safe, or will he yield to this new threat and sacrifice himself? The film draws interesting parallels between the luring, addictive power of magic and the addictions real teenagers face. The sufficiently creepy setting echoes New England and sets the stage for supernatural phenomena. THE COVENANT also stars Sebastian Stan as Chase Collins, a wealthy newcomer to Spenser, and Jessica Lucas as Kate, Sarah’s roommate and Pogue’s girlfriend.
