one created his successful Play album using old field recordings of blues and folk artists, so Brill has used a stash of 78rpm recordings of cantors singing various prayers as the basis of this record. Brill has sampled these melodic and evocative recordings and worked them into some rich fourth world/ambient music which. At its best The Covenant is reminiscent of The Orb at their most coherent: a crisp, clean mash of laid-back beats, polished ambience and carefully placed samples. Elsewhere, Brill's Californian roots come to the New Agey fore; the guitar solos are a tad pat while the recitations from the books of Hollywood guru Deepak Chopra might not be to everyone's taste. These are small quibbles, though. The Covenant plays the easy-on-the-ear ambient game perfectly, putting an extraordinary, relatively unknown music tradition into an invigorating and intriguing modern sound. --Robert Heller

The Story As the film begins the viewer is given a brief history of the Ipswich Colony, this is given in text rather than an action sequence. From this we establish that the descendants of the Ipswich families are still bound by the covenant of silence, that the powers are seductive and highly addictive. we are then introduced to the modern day descendants standing on the edge of a cliff looking down at a party that's going on below. They decide to join the party, their eyes go black and the four (very good looking ) guys (Caleb, Pogue, Reid and Tyler) jump off the cliff. At the party Kate, Pogue's girlfriend, introduces them to two new students Chase and Sarah. Pogue takes and instant dislike to Chase as he thinks Chase fancies Kate, while both Reid and Caleb are attracted to Sarah. Tensions rise between Reid and Caleb. Caleb thinks that not only is Reid in danger of becoming and addicted to the power but he's also in danger of breaking the covenant by using his power too much. Romance blossoms between Caleb and Sarah and Caleb also takes new boy Chase under his wing. Yet as his 18th birthday approaching and his ascending Caleb feels increasingly uneasy, he senses one of the others is using their powers behind his back and suspects Reid, he is also troubled by the appearance of a Darkling which takes the form of a murdered student.
My Experience I read a review of The Covenant online a few weeks ago (it might well of been on here but I can't remember) it sounded like a good story and I quite enjoy books, films and TV programmes about the supernatural. So despite the fact the film had a cast that was totally unknown to me I decided to add it to the list of films I wished to rent from my online DVD rental service. The film is totally actioned packed and only lulls for the briefest of moments, this makes it easy to watch and highly entertaining, it is never boring. The performances are quite mixed Steven Strait and Sebastian Dan give the best performances in the movie while Laura Ramsey and Tyler Kitsch often seem to be a bit wooden, but to be fair they were not given a great deal to work with. The script and screenplay are a bit bobbins they often seem rushed and a bit clumsy and a wee bit repetitive too. I lost count of the amount of time were told that power is seductive. I personally would've liked to learn more about the back story as it was relevant to the plot line and probably would've been just as interesting if done right. The special effects are as good as you would expect in a movie of this genre and I can't really find fault with them. Unfortunatly it's a little predictable, I realized who the bad guy was as soon as I first saw him and I'm sure other people will figure that out just as quickly too. I'm pretty sure the virtually unknown cast will soon all be big stars mainly because they are all so good looking rather than their acting abilities.
Director: Renny Harlin Running Time: 97 mins
Overall: Entertaining, great for eye candy but could've been a lot better.
Advantages: managed to capture the plot okay Disadvantages: could have been better
...Many people can remember the Covenant advertising before and when it hit theatres. I can remember it created quite a stir amongst my peers since many people thought it was going to be very very good, and everyone was rushing to see it, so of course it made a lot of money. Somehow though, the movie didn't meet a lot of people's expectations and a couple people I know ended up feeling unfulfilled after the movie ended.
What was it about?
THE PLOT: ... ...they did; but one of the families broke that covenant of silence and they were banished from the lands.
The powers of these families are transmitted through their descendants; and when the eldest male child is 18 years old, his power increases greatly; however if the power is abused or it is used in excess, it can age the warlock.
The movie really focuses on the decendants of the Ipswich four who attend high school and Caleb Danvers, the star of ...

Advantages: Liked the Trailer Disadvantages: Just not the film
...to aim to be like the series "Heroes"- magically empowered humans acting normal, combatting evil. Setting:
Hmm...it was set in todays society, with some scenes set in the woods, and some in the very stereotypical big dorm hall.
Story:
The storyline for this was all over the place, the movies ends with a very vague ending and lots of loose ends, when i say this i dont mean, loose ending and vaugue of LOST or spiderman 1. Basic plot is that 4 men ... ...the "evil force" , and they have to overcome jealousy and suspicion. Thats about it, everything else is pretty boring.
This movie is like some sort of series/tv programme that they quickly made into a film. My Verdict:
I would definatly not pay to buy this on DVD or would have gone to the cinema, if its on TV check what else is on if nothings on consider watching it.

...witchcraft... what a great mix. The first time i watched this film, i was very surprised that it had a link to an old play called The Crucible, which i thoroughly enjoyed.
The storyline is well structured and well thought-up. 4 teenage lads, called the sons of Ipswich, discover special powers inherited over generations. However, after centuries of believing that one of the families had been banished for the lusting for more power, they run into ... ...out when they meet for the final challenge of power.
The special effects in this film are unmatched in my eyes. The characters were well created and the actors and actresses fit them fantastically. The music compiled for the film fits oustandingly. From the producers of Underworld, i don't think anyone could expect any less from this film. It is a truly epic thriller that anyone can enjoy. ...

Advantages: Special effects Disadvantages: Cast, story not that great.
. When it appears that someone is already abusing their powers though it is up to the Sons to uncover which one of them has already turned bad!
The Covenant is an ok film. It is certainly not a world beating ?wow! You have to see this film? but at the same time it isn?t boring or complete rubbish. It certainly isn?t worth buying on DVD but it is very much worth sticking on your rental list if you like stuff like The Final Destination films or The Craft. There is enough of a story to keep you interested if not totally engrossed.
There are some truly spectacular stunts in The Covenant, in fact the could actually be described as original, something that cant be said about most of the film. One, the stand out one of the film, involves a sports car travelling at high speed crashing into a juggernaut and made me take a sharp intake of breath ...
Advantages: The ending, at last you are spared Disadvantages: The true purpose of this movie
No sooner has the Covenant started than your shouting at the screen "Oh no a Lost Boys rip off"; for the beginning starts in a very similar manner to The Lost Boys. For young(ish) men standing a top a cliff decide to fly down to the bottom so they can "Paaaaartaaaaa" that's party for the uneducated. But fear not these young(ish) men are not Vampires but friendly neighbourhood witches, descended from the original Ipswich witches (we've all heard about them).
The rather cutting dialogue above is not a 100% guide as to the way the movie is going, but it kind of gives you a good impression. The four witches in question are led by another witch called Caleb, all of them are on the verge of a big birthday in which they will "ascend" to a newer much more dangerous level of power. What's not clear and remains unclear throughout the movie ...
The sons of Ipswich are legendary at Spenser Academy, a New England boarding school. Handsome and popular, these four teenage friends can trace their roots to the founding families of the Ipswich Colony, settled in the late 1600s. For years these Massachusetts families have harboured the secret that they possess supernatural powers. Their descendants have inherited magical powers that first manifested themselves when the boys turned 13 years old. In a nutshell, they can do anything. As they approach their 18th birthdays, they are preparing to 'ascend', which means their powers will grow stronger. The downside? The magic is seductive and addictive, and causes premature aging with each use.

DVD Description
Renny Harlin (DIE HARD 2, DEEP BLUE SEA) directs this supernatural thriller about descendants of powerful New England families. The sons of Ipswich are legendary at Spenser Academy, the local boarding school. Handsome and popular, these four teenage friends can trace their roots to the founding families of the Ipswich Colony, settled in the late 1600s. For years these Massachusetts families have harboured the secret that they possess supernatural powers. Their descendants--Caleb (Steven Strait), Reid (Toby Hemingway), Tyler (Chace Crawford), and Pogue (Taylor Kitsch)--have inherited magical powers that first manifested themselves when the boys turned 13 years old. In a nutshell, they can do anything. As they approach their 18th birthdays, they are preparing to 'ascend', which means their powers will grow stronger. The downside? The magic is seductive and addictive, and causes premature aging with each use. Ringleader Caleb tries to keep his friends from using magic recklessly, but as the school year begins, strange events and a strong gut instinct convince Caleb that someone is using very powerful magic. Meanwhile, Caleb is exploring his newfound affection for transfer student Sarah (Laura Ramsey). To Caleb’s dismay, Sarah becomes a pawn in a power struggle with a descendant of the fifth founding family of Ipswich, a line thought to be lost during Salem’s witch trials. Is Caleb strong enough to maintain his power and keep his family and friends safe, or will he yield to this new threat and sacrifice himself? The film draws interesting parallels between the luring, addictive power of magic and the addictions real teenagers face. The sufficiently creepy setting echoes New England and sets the stage for supernatural phenomena. THE COVENANT also stars Sebastian Stan as Chase Collins, a wealthy newcomer to Spenser, and Jessica Lucas as Kate, Sarah’s roommate and Pogue’s girlfriend.
