Plot
The film is a made-for-TV movie adaption of the novel of the same name by Alexandre Dumas and is set in the Napoleonic era and stars Richard Chamberlain as Edward Dantes; a man with the world at his feet. Dantes is about to become a Captain in the Navy and is set to marry his true love, Mercedes (played by Kate Nelligan).Dantes plans are scuppered by three men who falsely accuse him of conspiring with Napoleon. Dantes is sentenced to live out his life in an isolated prison fortress, the Chateau D'If, on the island of Monte-Cristo. Dantes desire for revenge on the men who ruined his life is the only thing that can save him.
It is here that he meets Abbé Faria, an old man who has desperately been trying to tunnel his way out, but thanks to a wrong turn has tunnelled his way into Dantes' cell. Abbé Faria imparts knowledge of a hidden treasure to Dantes, who when he finally is able to escape collects the riches and reinvents himself as The Count of Monte-Cristo.
Dantes is assumed dead by his betrayers and even his ex-fiancé Mercedes (now married to one of the betrayers). The Count heads for Paris where he becomes a much admired member of society. He makes the acquaintance of the men responsible for his downfall, as he plots his revenge. Mercedes is the only person who recognises Dantes but at first even she is unsure of his true identity, having believed that Dantes had died in prison.
Extras
Nothing to see here! (Well not much anyway.) The Special Features menu boasts a Theatrical Trailer and Image Gallery; worth a quick peak but nothing to write home about. There are no subtitles at all which is unfortunate, as the hard of hearing might encounter some difficulty following some of the faster dialogue.
Performance
Richard Chamberlain gives a fantastic performance as Dantes; showing perfectly the transformation from naïve teenager just home from sea to a prisoner on the verge of madness and then finally the Count, an elegant and polished yet hardened man, vengefully seeking justice and revenge.
Trevor Howard shines as Abbé Faria; on first impressions he is a madman but he swiftly reveals his true character. Both Richard Chamberlain and Trevor Howard received Emmy nominations for their performances.
What appeals about this movie to me is the great plotline and the very non-Hollywood ending. There have been countless adaptations of The Count of Monte Cristo (okay I exaggerate- you probably could count them); but this movie is definitely the best of the few I have seen, and arguably the definitive adaptation. What I was very impressed with was how much of the film was true to the novel; don't get me wrong- a LOT has been changed and many things omitted, but nothing that takes away from viewing pleasure. Perhaps I am not explaining this well, what I really mean is that the feeling of the film is very true to the novel; in particular the shifts from scenes and locations, times and characters -this mimics Dumas' book, which shifted scenes between characters.
Visually, I adore the film; the locations used throughout the film are simply stunning. It's not packed full of CGI and all the other effects we are used to in today's blockbusters; however I prefer this - it makes the story more real, which definitely appeals more to me.
The main criticism with the film, and I am not the only person to have noticed this, is the accents. The story is set in France, but you would never have thought it due to the awful mix of accents. Chamberlain and Curtis have American accents, Pleasance and Howard British accents, and Jourdan and other cast members French accents.
The film has a running time of 98 minutes and is rated UNIVERSAL: Suitable for all. This film is probably too long and complex for all ages though, and I feel that all the Universal rating represents is the lack of bad language or hard-core violence. (There are sword fights a-plenty though!)
I loved this film but it is not for everyone, If you don't like anything that wasn't made in the last five years with a slick Hollywood ending and a budget of kazillions (it might not be a word yet but wait a couple of years) of dollars then this probably isn't the film for you. But if you enjoy a psychological drama with a dose of good old-fashioned adventure then give this film a chance!
Advantages: Exciting, sword fighting, not too much bodice ripping Disadvantages: None
, so as not to narrow the audience and so any scenes where sex is involved are very underplayed and those involved are still fully clad and merely kiss and perhaps, rather daringly, hug!
I found this a great relief as there is nothing I hate more when watching a drama or action film than to be assailed at every turn by heaving bosoms and overlibidious men. I have gone to watch the film for the sword fighting, the duels, the evil villains and exciting stunts and not to see some woman in the nude. If I wanted that there are plenty of pornos down at my local video shop.
The Count of MonteCristo had a romantic interest but that was not what dominated our hero?s actions, as he obviously thought with his brain and not what was in his trousers. No nudity here (sorry if that disappoints you blokies)!
ENJOYMENT FACTOR
The film will ...
Advantages: Good action, looks great, fantastic story Disadvantages: Average script and acting, misses lots out from the book
is now married to his enemy and they are living in Paris. So he goes off and tracks them down, and with his new-found wealth, he can finally get his vengeance on all those that betrayed him, under the pretence of the Count of MonteCristo?
As I said, I do like this genre of film anyway, so I was always going to enjoy this. It has everything an adventure film should have: a gripping storyline, a dastardly villain (but not over the top), some great swashbuckling action, stunning locations and costumes, and even buried treasure. The acting from the two leads is fine, if not ground-breaking, with Guy Pearce being cast perfectly as the baddie due to his evil grin. There are also appearances from the late Richard Harris as Faria, and possibly someone off Taggart playing Napoleon Bonaparte; see if you recognise him! The woman who plays ...
Advantages: Excellent swash buckling entertainment Disadvantages: Strays from the book too much for puritans
This is one of those films that I've always had on my list of things to watch but never quite got round to, then it was shown on terrestrial TV and I was left with no excuse - I am very glad I couldn't find anything. I think most people are at least aware of the title and the existance of Alexandre Dumas classic novel of betrayal and revenge and I was very impressed by the way it translated on to the screen.
The story focuses on Edmond Dantes (Jim Cavievel) who is a moral and idealic young sailor on a vessel with his best friend Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce) who is the heir to the title 'Count of Morcerf'. The story open with these two men landing on Elba (then the prison of Napoleon) to seek aid for their sick captain. The Captain dies but Napoleon is impressed with Edmonds honour and asks him to deliver an innocent letter for him to ...
