Fast Eddie Felson (Paul Newman), once a formidable Pool shark, is now much older and wiser. Having given up Pool many years ago he now sells booze to clubs and bars. On one of his sales trips, he comes across Vince (Tom Cruise), a young and very gifted Pool player with a 'sledge hammer break'. Seeing a lot of himself in Vince, he offers to take him and his girlfriend on the road, learning the trade of a Pool hustler in the Pool halls and bars, with a promise of making some serious money, ending up in a huge legitimate Pool competition. Unfortunately, Vince is a fiery young man, who cannot see the bigger picture, especially when he is told that he must loose before he can win. After a while of being educated and guided by Eddie, he decides he has had enough and will go it on his own. In the meantime Eddie has realised that the game of Pool still runs thick through his veins and decides that he is also going to enter the Pool competition, and ultimately end up playing his prodigy.
The Color of Money is the 1986 sequel to the 1961 film "The Hustler" starring Paul Newman as the young Eddie Felson. Where as in "The Hustler" we get to see Eddie experiencing
the good and the bad side of hustling, in The Color of Money, Eddie becomes a teacher who demonstrates everything he has learnt to his young prodigy, but at the same time he rediscovers his love of the game. Although it is not as good as the original, it is still a very enjoyable film which demonstrates the acting ability of Newman and Cruise but also the expert direction of Martin Scorsese.
In the lead role of Fast Eddie Felson is Paul Newman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) who although is playing the same character as in the original, he is now 25 years older and much wiser. Newman does a great job of playing the cool mentor who over the years has become a great judge of character and in doing so has learnt how to control people. This is very apparent in the opening few scenes where he pulls Vince's strings to get him to come out on the road. Newman actually won an Oscar for his leading role in this film. The young Vince is played by Tom Cruise (Top Gun), a very flamboyant young man who prances round a Pool table like he's on a dance floor. The contrast between the two main characters is like chalk and cheese, the only thing they have in common is the love of Pool. This provides a good basis for a father and son relationship where Eddie tries to teach Vince, but Vince just argues and doesn't listen to the advice. Vince's girlfriend, Carmen, is played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (The Abyss), who does an adequate job of playing this character. Carmen is the only other person who can manipulate Vince and she is part of the reason why they depart company with Eddie. The supporting cast all do an adequate job but nothing really to shout home about, except for John Turturro (Mr. Deeds) as another Pool player.
The film is directed by Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Raging Ball) and in my opinion it is a different style of film to his usual. What Scorsese achieves in this film is that he captures the mood of Pool from both the main characters perspectives. From the character of Vince, we see the showman who enjoys being the hot shot round the table, who spins his cue round like a baton. Vince knows he's good and can't help but tell you through the way he acts and his general cockiness. Then you have Eddie, the master, who understands the finer points of Pool and hustling and who realises that the game is still in his blood. Some of Scorsese's use of camera angle is brilliant, with the camera following the balls down the table or a dialogue between Eddie and Vince is done with the camera panning between them instead of chopping between angles, truly genius Probably his greatest achievement in the film is that he convinces you that both Cruise and Newman are expert Pool players. The sound track is full of bluesy numbers which help to set the scene in the smokey pool halls.

Although this is by no means as good as "The Hustler", it is still a very enjoyable trip into the world of the pool shark. Newman and Cruise put in very convincing performances as pool players at different ends of the scale. The film moves at a good pace and has some excellent footage of the games, where it is let down is that it is slightly predictable. Fans of Newman and Cruise will almost certainly enjoy this along with fans of sports dramas. Otherwise I would suggest you give this a miss. The Color of Money is available on Amazon for £4.97 which is a good price for this film.
