Before watching it everybody told me that this movie is an outstanding one. That was the reason why I wanted to own this DVD by myself. If I think that this is a real outstanding masterpiece you may read in my following opinion.

The DVD: The Cider House Rules__
The Cider House Rules is based upon the successful novel of John Irving. Famous director Lasse Hallström is responsible for the film version. The readers who have already read the complex novel, will quickly find out that this difficult adaptation is well done. One reason for this success is the continuous assistance of the author John Irving who also wrote the screenplay for "The Cider House Rules".

/*/The story
The young Homer Wells has spend his whole life in the orphanage of Dr. Larch. As a child he was introduced in the gynecological work by his mentor Dr. Larch. For Dr. Larch Homer became some kind of his own son from whom he expected that he fulfilled his services in the orphanage. Homer took care of the small inhabitants of the orphanage and supports his mentor with births. The abortions are a taboo for him, however.
When one day the young pair Wally and Candy comes for an abortion to the orphanage Homer sees the possibility to break out of his life at the orphanage. He wants to know what it means to be free and wants to live his one life without Dr. Larch. He leaves the orphanage with the pair and tries to begin a new life. Then as a worker at an apple farm Homer earns his first own money. When Wally had to go in the war, he begins a hot affair with Candy. But the happiness will not be for a long time. Wally returns from the war. He is badly wounded and not aible to walk. At this moment terrible things happened in the orphanage – Homer has to make a decision.

/*/The actors
Also on the side of the actors this film shines. In the role of the old doctor Dr. Larch Michael Caine is to be seen who supplies a grand performance. This is underlined by the fact that he was distinguished for this also with an oscar. The roles of the "forbidden" courting couple were occupied with the young Tobey Maguire and the famous Charlize Theron which come over as well convincing and first of all authentically. The acting performances are brilliant on the whole line and are not limited to the leading actors – this movie is perfectly occupied in any way.

/*/The Feelings
“The Cider House Rules” is a real heartbreaker film with a lot of difficult subjects. The story and its conversion touched my heart from the first minute up to the last one. Particularly the already mentioned acting performances convinced me. Also the many artistically pictures have an outstanding effect to the viewer. Lasse Hallström seems to be some kind of a painter who lets the story flow in great pictures. I shared my feelings with the central figure of the young Homer Wells – that is great stuff.
Homer`s inner conflict between the recent discovery of the freedom and the sense of responsibility for the clinic and the children in the orphanage are always noticeable and fascinating. Also the work of the small orphans on the spectator is phenomenally and finds its emotional climax with the death of one of the children. As well I like this movie I love soundtrack which always formed a harmonious unity with the optical impressions. Only - and I mean only - for strict action fans this film may not be suitable – for any others “The Cider House Rules” is a must!

/*/The DVD
Just as the film the rest of the DVD convinced me. On the one hand the menus are animated, really, extremely well – it is a pleasure to handle with the menus. On the other hand you will find a lot of special features to enjoy. You may watch some different trailers or enjoy several bonus material that give you a lot of detailed and very interesting information about the production of this film. First of all the "Making of" gives outstanding looks behind the scenes and should not be missed at any rate.

Picture and sound can not be criticized and offer you that quality you are going to expect from a good DVD. However, you should not expect many special effects in this area. This one is for the heart and not for the "action moments of life".

Sum__
In my point of view this film is an absolute masterpiece and for each of you who would like to see a movie with big emotions a must have. This DVD is worth evey penny.
