Don’t take that the wrong way....it’s been a long fight to get this film on the screen, that’s all (the book having been published in 1985....the author having wrote his first draft of the film in 1986).
In both cases, John Irving makes an impassioned case for the rights of abortion which on the whole are convincing (unless, you’re a staunch pro-rights activist which of course, means that the film is complete piffle....).
Tobey Maguire stars as Homer Wells, a teenage resident of an orphanage in Maine, coming of age during World War Two.
The doctor at the orphanage Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine) who’s extremely overworked as an abortionist, obstetrician AND physician....although he copes with it quite well with an addiction to ether....and involving himself with the nurses.
Homer finds himself working with him as an unlicensed trainee doctor (although Larch has plans about that....). Homer tires quickly and wants out of this and soon escapes.
He meets up with a young couple at a farm, Wally and Candy (Paul Rudd and Charlize Theron), the former, an airmen soon to return to the war and his young wife, who can’t cope much with being alone.
At the farm, he helps pick apples along with migrant workers (including Delroy Lindo and Erykah Badu) and ponders on his mentor’s words of warning about the world.
It has all the feel of a classic American movie with wonderful performances (particularly Caine even with that accent) and sumptious settings. Maguire though isn’t particualry engaging and Theron is as warm and fuzzy as her role expects.
One false note is how Delroy Lindo’s character is treated....perhaps an air of grace or two that should have been resolved (to reveal what he does would destroy some of the film though....).
At just over 2 hours, it’ll test some viewers.with it’s moralistic tale of coming to terms with disappointment and the difference between right and wrong.. The film may appear confusing BUT it isn’t, encasing a bunch of wonderful scenarios in it’s length.
