The premise ... ...the inhabitants of New Mecca are an inclusive, multi-faith population who co-exist peacefully, contrasting with the Necromongers' 'if- you're-not-with-us-you're-against-us' neocon mantra of 'we will convert you, or we will kill you'.

Pitch Black had its moments and an intriguing premise, so despite the sequel's negative press and poor box office performance, I decided to check out this Vin Diesel space opera, Chronicles of Riddick.
The survivors of Pitch Black have returned to New Mecca and Riddick is still on the run, this time from mercenaries and the terrifying Necromongers (think of the Borg crossed with the Roman Empire) who are laying waste to the universe.
The premise is an interesting play on contemporary global religio-politics, as here the inhabitants of New Mecca are an inclusive, multi-faith population who co-exist peacefully, contrasting with the Necromongers' 'if- you're-not-with-us-you're-against-us' neocon mantra of 'we will convert you, or we will kill you'.
Essentially it's a film in three acts. We follow Riddick from initial merc capture and the destruction of New Mecca, his escape from a triple-max prison planet (reprising and amplifying Pitch Black's meteorology); and final showdown against the Necromongers.
The film charges along at a terrific pace, and borrows some of the best ideas from the sci-fi genre (Star Wars, Dune, and, er, Fortress).
Despite the massive special effects, the film seems to work best on DVD, where one more readily accepts with humour the Dune-like pomposity and heavy dialogue. If you can overlook this, then you'll enjoy this immensely. My girlfriend, who normally hates these kinds of films, loved every minute.

Review of The Chronicles Of Riddick (Director's Cut) (DVD)
Advantages: An interesting and remarkable new story line Disadvantages: May alienate some die-hard cult fans of 'Pitch Black'
'The Chronicles Of Riddick' is the sequel to 'Pitch Black', (although 'The Chronicles Of Riddick: Dark Fury' was also released to help explain the leap between the stories of the two). Set five years after the end of 'Pitch Black', it tells the story of Riddick coming out of a self-imposed exile because there is a bounty on his head, only to become embroiled in a fight between opposing forces, where "evil can only be overcome by another, lesser kind ... ...raised in 'Pitch Black', including the different races that exist, (e.g. Dame Judi Dench's Elemental character), Riddick's origins and the "evil" race of Necromongers.
Before I continue I have to put my hands up and say I haven't seen the theatrical version, I've only watched this Directors' Cut, so I'm unable to tell you exactly which scenes have been added/expanded. I'd like to apologise now if this means this particular review isn't of any use ...

Advantages: Perhaps a couple of seconds of coolness in the film Disadvantages: Everything else
...I really did. I played the excellent Escape from Butcher's bay and loved that also. Unfortunately, the admiration train derailed when I was unfortunate enough to watch The Chronicles of Riddick.
In the future, the once ubercool Riddick (Vin Diesel) has found out that he is a member of a race called "Furians", presumably so named because of their ability to get really quite angry. The even more laughably-named "Necromongers" (Presumably you find ... ...to conquer the galaxy, no doubt because of the galaxy collectively laughing at the homo-erotic costumes that they wear. Such conquests seems to begin by driving a large phallic object into the ground of a planet. Subtle, they are not.
Apparently, the Necromongers want to get to the "Underverse", no doubt marked by a very large Calvin Klein label. As such labels tend to be black, you can appreciate how hard it must be to find it in outerwear - sorry, ...

...this movie coming out in the cinemas but at the time I wasn't too enthusiastic on going. I would realize my mistake when I rented it a couple of months later on DVD. Although watching the prequel Pitch Black is not a must, it sheds some light on some of the aspects in Chronicles of Riddick, especially Riddick's encounter with previous characters such as Imam and Jack (the girl).
The part is played brilliantly by Vin Diesel, portraying a man alone ... ...Now as humanity stands on the brink of extermination, he is thrust in the midst of a fight that is not his. His defiant nature and rock hard personality will appeal to all those moved by bravery and resilience in the face of destruction.
Aided by good visual effects and a slightly comedic undertone at just the right times, this movie is certainly one to add to your collection. ...

The sequel to cult sci-fi hit PITCH BLACK sees Vin Diesel enthusiastically returning to his role as Richard B. Riddick. Director-writer David Twohy is on board again, building on themes established in the first movie, and expanding his vision with some incredible special effects work. Twohy opens the movie with Riddick on the run from a group of bounty hunters. He escapes them with ease, then seeks information from an old friend named Inam (Keith David). Inam informs Riddick that he has been singled out by an Air Elemental, Aereon (Judi Dench), as the one man who can stop the evil Necromongers from taking over the Universe. Suddenly, the Necromongers arrive on the planet, causing mayhem and destruction. They capture Riddick. He soon escapes, only to fall into the hands of the bounty hunters he so deftly eluded at the start of the movie. They take Riddick to a rogue prison planet where he is met by scorching heat, an underground penitentiary, and his female companion from PITCH BLACK, Jack (who is now called Kyra, and played by a different actress, Alexa Davalos). They plan their escape from the planet, and vow to bring down the Necromongers. Things don't go according to plan however, leading to a suspense-filled climax to the film, and an eyebrow-raising ending that suggests Twohy may have plans for further instalments in the story.
