incomparable Christopher Reeve. SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE sees the birth of a legend as we are introduced to the titular superhero and his Kryptonian origins. Also included is the extended director's cut, which features an additional eight minutes of screen time. This is followed by SUPERMAN II in which our boy in blue must do battle with three escaped super criminals bent on destroying the earth. Presented here in both its theatrical and director's cut versions, the latter is expanded by an alternate beginning and ending, as well as 15 minutes of restored footage of Marlon Brando as Jor-El. In the third instalment in the franchise, SUPERMAN III, Superman learns of his Achilles heel when he is exposed to kryptonite. Rounding off the set is SUPERMAN IV, in which the Man of Steel takes on Nuclear Man, culminating in an explosive showdown of epic proportions.

Superman The Movie: The never before seen footage makes you wonder why they cut it from the original, as there are some clever special effects showing that Superman is extreme temperature resistant. Perhaps the running time was an issue, however, for one who's seen Superman a thousand times, the extra footage will not dissapoint.
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut: This is where over half the film has been remade with recently found footage that was thought lost, from when Richard Donner was the director and was sacked by Warner Bros over budget issues. They also cut Marlon Brando and only had his voice, to avoid paying him astranomical fees. With Brando now deceased, the footage of him is also put back in, hightening Superman Lore between father and son. My review of this new version: I had previous knowledge that some of the scenes were only screen tests, and they did very well to put the whole thing together into a workable film, but you do get the impression from certain scenes that maybe it wasn't a bad thing another director took over. There are good and bad points from both films, and you are left with a version which you like some bits better but not others, such is the radical differences. I thought the new ending and beginning were not as well thought out in the RD version, but the whole tone of the film is more serious, and does away with the comedy from such things as a mime on rollerscates, which took away the seriousness of the situations. I guess you could compare it to being Sean Connery's James Bond VS Roger Moore's. Richard Donner is the seriousness of Sean's Bond, but looks older. The version we all know is like Roger Moore's; it mixes light comic releif for a more comfortable viewing experience. Without digressing too much, or giving anything away, the Richard Donner cut is worth a look, and has replay value, especially with Terrance Stamp's new footage with a gun in The White House, which is very funny.
Superman III: This is still a good yarn, but was better in the day, when Richard Pryor's comedy had more effect. The computer based premise of this is laughable by today's technology, but it's worth a look for the awesome fight between Superman & Clark Kent. This is a nice film to complete the trilogy. Yes, I said trilogy, because I refuse to accept that any more existed after this film.
Superman IV: Avoid at all costs. As the comic book store owner from The Simpsons would say: "Worst film: EVER!"
