For some reason I missed this series when it was shown on BBC television and I started to watch some of the second series, but as I like to know what's what and who's who in these shows, I decided to stop watching Series 2 on tv, wait for it to come out on dvd and buy both Series 1 and 2 on dvd.
I have just finished watching Series 1 on dvd and I can highly recommend it. The show is a great drama, it has romance, comedy, drama and everything all rolled into one.
The show is written by Kay Mellor who has written many fantastic drama series, such as Fat Friends and Band of Gold. The cast reads like a who's who of tv stars and includes:
Keith Barron - plays George Williams Gaynor Faye - plays his daughter Anna Nicola Stephenson - plays his daughter Sarah Michelle Holmes - plays his second wife Claudie Janet Dibley - plays Rick\'s wife Reece Dinsdale - plays Rick Sunetra Sarker - plays Claire Rachael Davies - plays Margaret Heather Pearce - plays
Fiona
All of these stars have appeared in other top dramas, such as Holby City, Brookside, Coronation Street, Londons Burning, Band of Gold. Of course Gaynor Faye is Kay Mellor's daughter and as such seems to appear in every drama that her mother has written!
The Chase is Chevin Chase, a veterinary practice in the fictional village of Oxley in Yorkshire. It was built up by George Williams and his late wife Imogen and is now run by George along with his daughter Anna, her husband Tom, and Rick who is a senior partner. His other daughter Sarah returns from London for his wedding to Claudie and is persuaded to stay and work on at the vets practice.
Rick's wife Deborah is the Practice Manager and Fiona, Clare, Margaret and Matt are the practice nurses.
The series covers starts with the wedding of George to Claudie, whereby he breaks the bombshell to his daughters that he is off to Malta for a few months and will be signing the vets practice and house over to them. This is totally out of the blue for the family. Anna is pregnant with her fourth child and Sarah wants to go back to London.
What the girls decide to do and what happens next for the family takes up the first series.
Some of the relationships are complex, Fiona is Sarah and Anna\'s cousin and hides a guilty secret. The two daughters tolerate Claudie because she makes their father happy, but there is a big age gap and he listens to everything that Claudie says.
Rick is despairing of his marriage to bossy Deborah, so who does he turn to for comfort? Claudie has a secret of her own that she hopes wont come out. Sarah left for London after discovering Fiona's secret. Now that she is back will she be able to keep quiet? and what happens to her London boyfriend now?
Sarah also wants to modernise the practice but faces some opposition from her father. Tom also has a secret that will ruin his life if it gets out. George has a secret that will devastate one of his daughters.
With all these secrets just waiting to come out, it makes for really good drama.
While the series is based around a vets practice you do not see any awful lot of the animals, mainly some cats and dogs, and the occasional hand up a cows bum scene, which is obligatory in any vets tv show, remember All Creatures Great and Small?!
I have just started to watch Series 2 on dvd, and will review that when I have watched it all, but I am sad that BBC have decided not to make any more series of this drama as it is well written and very watchable.
As with any good drama you get drawn into the characters lives and start to empathise with them.
I think that any great drama needs good strong characters that you can believe in and The Chase certainly has that. Michelle Holmes plays Claudie brilliantly, she comes across as slightly niave and innocent, but calculating at the same time!
Gaynor Faye is always the same, good performance, but hard to tell one character from another sometimes. Nicola Stephenson turns in a good performance. Reece Dinsdale does get on your nerves a bit in that he is a bit smarmy and cheesy. I love Rachel Davies, she has been in so many top dramas. She is woefully underused in this show, but gives a good performance as Mags going through the menopause. Keith Barron I usually associate more with comedy that drama, but he pairs well with Claudie to make an unlikely relationship seem believeable.
I would recommend this dvd series for some light hearted entertainment.
This dvd does not have any extras.
I paid £14.99 for mine from play.com.
