Jennifer Lopez is not famous for her acting talent, but generally as something pretty to look at in a film. It's only when you watch films like this one that you realise how disgracefully unfair that is to Miss Lopez. In films such as this and 'out of sight' she is able to display impressive acting skills which outshine even her most talented and experienced colleagues.
In this film Miss Lopez plays Catherine, a researcher in a mental laboratory where she enters the mind of a young boy in a vegetative state in order to help coax him out into the real world. At least, that's how it starts. We are quickly introduced to the world of Karl, a sick and twisted serial killer who likes to slowly drown his female victims while filming them. After this he dowses them in enbalming fluid, raises himself to the roof on hooks attatched to his back and masturbates over the corpses while watching the video of their final moments. Only one word can describe this, sick. Straight away the film enables you to develop a serious loathing of this character thanks, mainly, to the incredible acting skills of Vincent D'Onofrio. The police eventually catch him but, with one victim still missing, he refuses to say where she is. In comes Catherine. She steps into Karl's head in order to find the wherabouts of the missing girl.
HERE BEGINS THE MOST SURREAL HEAD-TRIP EVER SEEN. All I want to know is how they thought up some of these scenes; this is one of the most messed-up films I have ever had the fortune to see. Every idea in this film is an absolute gem, truly original and irreversibally disturbing. Needless to say there is a cop love-interest who chases in after her when she gets into trouble. Certain parts of this film, although a whole new strange experience, come across as shockingly sensual; where Catherine is sprawled, in gold and black clothing all over a bed of gold sheets when the cop first enters Karl's head. The film builds to an exciting climax as Catherine finally does what her bosses have been telling her not to do all through the film, and lets Karl into her mind. I won't spoil it for you, because the film is so strange and dark that you have to see it to understand it properly.
The special effects are superb, astounding, tremendous, amazing and all the other similar adjectives that could be put here. It's an amazing film. Oh yeah, and the serial killer has the sweetest dog in the world; a rare albino German Shepard.
This film proves that Jennifer Lopez can act, and act well at that.

If you haven't seen this film yet, then I BEG you to go and rent it now!

If you're lucky enough to get it on DVD then, damn, you are in for a treat. On the DVD version you get:
The original trailers to the films,
Deleted scenes,
The director's favourite scenes - with director's commentary,
Filmographies for each of the main actors,
An empathy test to perform on yourself,
And a little lesson about the parts of the brain.

Hmm, now you see. If you have a DVD player, it's worth buying now.
Even if you only have a VCR, it's worth buying now. One of the greatest films of 2000. Vmm.
