The Cat Returns begins with schoolgirl, Haru, saving a cat from being run over by a truck. The cat is in fact the Prince of all cats in the Cat Kingdom, the King bestows upon her gifts to thank her but Haru finds out she is to be married to Prince Lune! A voice takes her to the Cat Bureau where the figurine cat, Baron, lives, Baron agrees to help her but the royal cats kidnap her and take Haru to the Cat Kingdom. As they get ready for the 'marvellous' wedding Baron and his friends race against the clock to save her, or else she'll be turned into a cat!
Since I am a fan of most of Studio Ghibli's works, (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service,) this was a welcome addition to my collection. I was not dissappointed, another great film that will be loved by many Studio Ghibli fans.
The graphics are in anime style (Japanese cartoons). I thought the artists created a unique take on cats, I was amazed to see how the movement of the cats reminded me of the real-life versions (except for when they're standing on their hind legs or speaking! Heh...). The backgrounds have had a lot of details put into them, which I found absolutely beautiful, just like a manga.
Voice-acting is excellent in both the Japanese and English dubs, both of the voices for the characters sound as if they belong to them. For once I'm not forced to change the English dub to Japanese because of the voice actors!
I found The Cat Return's storyline sweet and light-hearted, although I was dissappointed that the film only lasted for 74 minutes since there was some scenes inbetween involving the Cat Kingdom which I thought were slightly rushed so that the film could come to an end.
All in all though I found this was delightful, some may not like its fluffy nature but most audiences will enjoy this. A brilliant movie to watch several times, rainy or sunny.
Special Features: Movie Trailers - Several trailers (around ten I believe) which were shown in Japan so the voice acting is still in Japanese. Storyboards - This shows some of the sketches that were made before it had been completed. Trailer Reels - Studio Ghibli are doing some self-advertising! Choosing this shows several clips of their other works. The Making of 'The Cat Returns' - A piece on how it was made.
