I first watched The Cat in the Hat on sky with my 3-year old son. We found it so funny that I ended up buying the DVD to put in with his Christmas present.
This film is an adaptation of he original Dr Seuss book. It stars Mike Myers as the oversized cat, and also stars Kelly Preston and Alec Baldwin. It is a Dreamworks film, produced by Brian Brazer, and with music by Davd Newman.
The film begins with Joan Walden at her work in Real Estate. Her boss tells her that if her house is a mess for the party she is hosting tonight then she will be fired. She gets a call from the babysitter to tell her that she is leaving, so Joan has to go home and organise another babysitter for her children, Conrad and Sally. This comes in the form of Mrs Kwan - an oversized lady who spends all of her babysitting time sleeping.
Once Mrs Kwan is at the house, Joan goes back to work giving the children - or more precisely, Conrad - strict instructions not to mess up the house as she is having the party tonight.
Meanwhile, her neighbour and bofriend (Alec Baldwin) is trying to convince her that because Conrad is mischievious (a typical boy, I say!) that he should be sent to military school.
With Joan back at work, the children are bored - it's raining outside, Conrad is grounded and Mrs Kwan is sleeping.
Out pops the cat who keeps them thoroughly entertained for the afternoon. The fish starts talking when the cat arrives and the cat also brings Thing 1 and Thing 2 with him.
While entertaining Conrad and Sally, the cat end up destroying the house (referred to as the Mother of all Messes) - which he later tidies with his D.I.R.T. (his cleaning machine!). The film follows the adventures of cat as he messes the house, loses Conrad and Sally's dog Nevin, and goes out with them to find him.
At the start of the film the cat had classed Conrad as a rule breaker and Sally as a control freak, but at the end he tells them they are just right, as they have both learnt the consequences of being too controlling or not listening.
Cat, funnily enough, didn't stick around to meet Conrad and Sally's mum, but everything worked out okay in the end as the house was tidy and Joan dumped her neighbour (she thought he'd gone insane when he arrived messy and said it was the messy house and the oversized cat that did it - she took her kids side in the end).
The film lasts for an hour and 18 minutes so it's not too long for young kids. It's rated a PG, and on the DVDthere are extras, such as deleted scenes, outtakes, The Cat, The Fish, The Kids, the Mother of all Messes and dance along with cat.
I would recommend this film to anyone, it's a brilliant, light-hearted, entertaining film, and I hope anyone who watches it after reading my review enjoys it.

Good review but a bit more info would be great. This film came out the same weekend as I had my second son. When my eldest was asked what he was looking forward to as left school for the weekend, he said the Cat in the Hat movie!!

There's loads of helpful storyline info in here, but I would have liked to read a bit more on your opinion. Nevertheless this is a helpful review. x
