It was in fact several months ago when I first saw the trailer for this film. Little did I know then I would in fact venture out of my dark home to go and see it for my very small brother's 7th birthday party. So, at first I had no intentions of wanting to see it especially, and thought little of it, other than the fact that it looked quite funny as it had Mike Myers in it. Obviously you have to be a Mike Myers fan if you are ever to see this movie and generally you have to have some sort of likening to the Austin Powers humour, and luckily I was able to meet that criteria. Now this was not a film that really fits the adult market too well, as it is one of those films that kids will adore and adults will grin and bear, but half way through this as I watched with grumpy eyes I began to think that this was actually quite funny.
I use the expression quite funny mainly because that is what I mean; there were a few moments where I laughed very quietly, and other times I was merely amused by what was happening on the screen. I
noticed however that the audience in the cinema was not responding as well to the film's humour. Whereas in Goldmember there was a laugh every two minutes, there was a disturbing silence in some of the jokes. Though this is not entirely true; I could still pick up a warm feeling and attitude towards the film. There were smiles in all directions, which was close enough to a laugh I suppose.
The film is obviously about the Cat in the Hat, a book created by the infamous Doctor Seuss. The book itself however, is rather different and the plot in the film is clearly an extended version of the book, although I've been told the resemblance between the two is far from similar. In fact, the book and the film should be classed quite possibly as different entities all together. The book is short and tells of quite a different story to the film, as the film is very intent on creating as much jokes as it can in the time limit imposed upon it.
The cast is an all American one sadly and the acting from the supporting actors isn't sparkling but then again there are no cringe making moments. There were a few famous faces such as Jack from Will and Grace, though he wasn't very funny without his camp humour. The jokes were actually quite overdone in places. The only real funny actor was Mike Myers and even he was only quite amusing, whereas the other actors plodded along and recited their lines like the technical crash analysis of a computer. The only other reasonably funny actor in my opinion was Larry, the evil romance of the boy's (Conrad's) mother who is determined on getting Conrad into military school.
The basic plot is this. A single mother has two children, Conrad and Sally. Conrad is a terrible trouble maker and Sally is a good as gold girl who likes to spill the beans on her brother at every opportunity. There is one man who I mentioned called Lawrence, mockingly called 'Larry' by Conrad who is the evil lover of estate agent single mother Joan who wants to pack Conrad off to Military School. Then when the children are left alone told that if they ruin the living room Conrad is off to military school, as his mother has to cater for a party that night. So they are left with an overweight Asian babysitter who falls asleep immediately. Then the Cat in the Hat comes and tells them they can have fun with nothing going wrong. And so the whole story leads to them having to stop Larry from delivering the lost dog to Joan as proof that Conrad is mucking around, as the Cat in the Hat begins to cause havoc.
Here is the cast:
THE CAT - Mike Myers LAWRENCE QUINN - Alec Baldwin THE FISH - Sean Hayes SALLY - Dakota Fanning CONRAD - Spencer Breslin JOAN - Kelly Preston MR. HUMBERFLOOB - Sean Hayes MRS. KWAN - Amy Hill
The film in general is entertaining and has little cause for discomfort. All in all the cast is quite good but Sally and Conrad aren't my favorite actor and actress though I did enjoy Dakota Fanning's performance in 'Taken' a lot more. But, my brother liked it a lot, as did his little friends, and I think the children of the world will have no problem in loving this near masterpiece. This may not be classic stuff, but the little bits such as every car being either a yellow or green Ford Focus just wraps it all up, such as the very well made topsy turvy towns. At the end of the day it is a good film with fun for all the family. It made me laugh and at that moment I was feeling rather bad. It cured my terrible mood, so it must be worth a look, if only for the sheer curiosity. Nice, feel good stuff.

My 5 year old dragged me to Burger King so that she could get a Cat in the Hat toy - one of the grimmest experiences I've had in a while! At least the film sounds half way OK.

One to miss if it's full of Mike Myers - my 20 yr old likes him - but I just think he's crude. As I recall the book, the cat in the hat tries to fix everything he does and things just get worse and worse until finally everything is done and ok again. ~~(:-)-{::::::::::|<
