<<<<< A Disappointment From The Team Who Made THE GRINCH >>>>>
I know many of you have been anticipating and patiently waiting for another film review from me, so here is the first one after almost a month’s absence…not counting my last one on the Academy Awards of course. So, for tonight I will be reviewing a film that only can be labeled as a disappointment. I’m sure many people (most notably kids) will be wanting to see this film on April 2nd, its UK release day, though I would advise parents to look for something better to do…unless you’re a fan of Mike Myers of course. Personally, I’m a fan of Mike Myers and this marks as the first film he has made that I didn’t like him in. For those of you that don’t know, the production team behind this film is from the same group that made DR. SUESS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS three years ago, with Jim Carrey doing a superb job in the title role and giving a wondrous treatment by director Ron Howard, who passed up this followup to direct THE MISSING with Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett. All I can say is that he made a wise choice.
While THE GRINCH was not critically acclaimed, I liked it very much just the same. It had charm, style, eye-popping production, and even some truly magical moments to spare…all contrasting perfectly with Jim Carrey’s performance. While Mike Myers seemed like the ideal choice to play the cat with the red-and-white striped hat, he actually came across as being dull, if you could imagine. Was he funny? Yes, at times, though he was mostly rude and crude, and even comes off as being mean-spirited at times. I’ll be honest with the fact that I’ve never seen the book, though I have seen the 1971 animated television special, which was animated by the great Chuck Jones. With this live-action adaptation stretched out to almost 80 minutes, it felt too frantic and frenetic to really work; granted, even THE GRINCH wasn’t perfect in that
respect, though it had one element that THE CAT IN THE HAT doesn’t, and that is charm. While kids might get a kick out of it, I’m actually advising parents of some of the things that are in this film which may make them reconsider. It may be my own opinion and if you don’t want to keep reading that’s fine, though I wouldn’t let my kids watch this film---and I’m not saying that because I was disappointed either.
<<<<< Ferocious Feline Comes To The “Aid” Of Two Joyless Kids >>>>>
THE CAT IN THE HAT starts out well, I will say that much, with a colorful look and feel of a town, as we come to a typical suburban house where we meet a brother and sister. Conrad is a toublemaker, while Sally is a control freak. He is spoiled, irresponsible, and obnoxious (I know…most brothers are at his age), while she is quiet and well behaved. And, yes, they don’t like each other at all, as you can guess since they are so different. Their mother is single, and a real estate agent, who is currently dating a slimy guy named Quinn living next door who wants to ship Conrad off to a military school, though Sally doesn’t want to commit to that…at least, not yet. Soon, Conrad finds himself grounded and forced to stay home with his sister and a overweight babysitter named Mrs. Kwan with abnormally large glasses. Before their mother goes back to work she orders them to not create any form of mess, and even going as far as saying the living room is off limits. Soon starts off a day that feels like there will be no fun or excitement, though they are soon have a visitor.
After Mrs. Kwan falls off to sleep (and manages to snore like a grizzly bear with a sinus condition in the process), Conrad and Sally are visited by The Cat in the Hat, who first comes across as frightening to the youngsters, but soon becomes a figure of fun that is determined to cheer the kids up. The Cat constantly spawns one liners, in typical Mike Myers-style, and appears and disappears with amazing suddenness. After stressing to the kids that they need to cheer up and have a great day full of sunshine and whimsy, The Cat soon becomes a bad influence…making them jump on the couches, making purple cupcakes that explode all over the walls, bringing on two weird little beings called Thing One and Thing Two who only make things worse, and soon the house becomes the “mother of all messes” when The Cat’s world begins to collide with the real world. Will the kids be able to fix the house before their mother gets back and sends Conrad off to military school? The answer is as obvious as this film is; believe me folks.
<<<<< Mike Myers Is Wasted…Now There’s A First >>>>>
I’ve been a Mike Myers fan ever since I saw WAYNE’S WORLD back in 1992. Granted, I’ve never seen any of his work on Saturday Night Live, though I like the AUSTIN POWERS films, and he did ingenious voice work on the movie SHREK. However, I thought he was never more funny and ingratiating than he was in SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER, a surprisingly entertaining and amusing comedy from 1993. So, the truth is that this first film that I thought his talent was virtually squandered. His vulgar interpretation of Dr. Seuss’ beloved character is really put to the test in terms of the audience’s patience. He was funny at times, but not enough, and after awhile I got sick and tired of his laughing and loud quips. The producers originally went to Tim Allen and offered the role to him, and for some reason I think he would have done a much better job…though even he had the good sense to turn the offer down after reading the script. His costume is indeed impressive, though it doesn’t hold your attention for very long. If you want to know, Myers was fitted with a garb that was a combination of Angora and human hair, and even fitted with a built-in cooling system. However, it’s evident that the costume does more for him than he does for it. I must say that the film started going downhill after The Cat’s arrival, which should give you a clue to what Myers performance is like, which I thought was completely unmemorable.
As to the other actors of the film, they mostly spout ridiculous dialogue and seem oblivious to everything that is going on in the film. As the mother, Kelly Preston is usually likeable but she manages to be twice as dull as Myers is. However, the worst one to be cast is Alec Baldwin as Quinn; as soon as his character comes onscreen, you know exactly what kind of person he is. As for the kids, well, they are cute, but nothing more. Dakota Fanning plays Sally with marginal appeal, though cannot match her previous performances in I AM SAM and TRAPPED. At 10 years old, she is certainly a talent and even maybe even destined to become a major actress, though she might want to consider getting a new agent. Her brother, played by 12-year-old Spencer Breslin, has shown talent before as well, in such films as THE KID (as the younger version of Bruce Willis) and as an elf in THE SANTA CLAUSE 2. Alas, neither of them seem to generate any feeling of affectation toward the characters and in the end, we really don’t care about them. If any of you watch the show “Will & Grace”, then you will probably recognize Sean Hayes, who plays Jack McFarland on that show. However, I truly loved his performance as the voice of Mr. Tinkles in CATS & DOGS. You guessed it; he is wasted here too…playing Preston’s boss Mr. Humberfloob and the voice of a talking goldfish (!).
<<<<< A Cat That Is Crude and Grotesque In The Extreme >>>>>
While The Grinch admittedly got a little frisky at times, even going so far as making someone kiss a dog’s butt, the stuff that Myers does in THE CAT IN THE HAT makes The Grinch’s actions seem not obscene at all. The main problem lies in the fact that Myers tries too hard to be funny, however this film is also genuine proof that Hollywood has gone way too far in terms of creating films for the family, particularly films that are made specifically for children, yet add in a lot of adult humor so the parents won’t be bored with it. With other films like the remake FREAKY FRIDAY it worked fine because of the story itself, but this is a film based on a classic children’s book, and I wouldn’t doubt that Dr. Suess himself would have been appalled at this film, probably as offended as Shakespeare would be if he had viewed the new version of ROMEO & JULIET when one of the characters licks his own nipple. Myers is funny for about the first five minutes with the introduction of his character, but then he goes completely nuts, gyrating around like an inexperienced clown in a cat costume. There is one scene I’m going to point at that told myself that this film is unsuitable for children, as Myers is in a garden, picks up a hoe and says, “You dirty ho!,” throws it down, and then picks it back up and says, “I’m sorry, baby, you know I still love you,” and then he actually starts to lick the hoe! There is also the time that he looks at the kids’ mother as a Playboy centerfold, as well as a chance for him to elicit several farts, complete with a plastic butt right below his tail. While someone may have found that funny on the set, I thought is was a desperate form of humor that has been done oh so many times before, and I couldn’t believe they decided to put these type of jokes in a film that was meant to be watched by kids. Sure, the kids may laugh anyway, and may not get all the stupid double entendres that permeate the film, though then again you never know.
If this was an average Mike Myers movie, it probably would have worked better, though we will never know. I’m sorry, I forgot to mention that The Cat occasionally intends to say foul language at times, though stops short before finishing. This was a device that worked for previous films like THE LION KING, but not for this one. Like I said before, soon after Myers appears, the film just goes downhill from there to utter and complete disaster, not even saved by Alex McDowell’s colorful production design and Alec Hammond’s and Sean Haworth’s wondrous art decoration. Producer Brian Grazer and his Imagine Entertainment team were obviously trying to fashion another GRINCH-like movie with an amusing comic actor, but director Bo Welch and the screenwriters (three guys not even worth mentioning) turn Dr. Seuss’ original story into a headache-inducing acid trip for the kiddies. Seriously, not even Mary Poppins could have saved this film…and, you know what, just when you think it couldn’t possibly get any worse, Paris Hilton shows up in a cameo. I’ll be honest when I say I almost turned off the DVD when she showed up; if you don’t know who she is, don’t even bother asking!
<<<<< Warning to Parents: Take Your Kids To A Much Better Film in April >>>>>
Hey, you don’t have to listen to me, but your kids really deserve better than this burned cupcake with sour frosting. The biggest disappointment I got out of this film was the wasting of Myers’ comic talents, though I was just more upset at the fact the filmmakers couldn’t stay faithful to the simple, sweet source material and just think about how to keep parents in the theater with their kids more. This is my one and only warning to you all. THE CAT IN THE HAT is very unwisely rated PG for crude humor and lewd double entendres. Opens in Theaters on April 2nd at theaters nationwide…also be warned of the shameless plugs at the local Burger King, lol. This will be the first in a series of new film reviews, so I hope you look forward to them. Thanks for reading, and take care all! Chris xxxxx
<<<<<< Ok, A Couple of Quotes >>>>>
1) “Without my real hat I’m just your average, garden-variety 6-foot black and white cat!” --- Mike Myers
2) “Oh, goody this will be the best place to hide in the whole house! Ok, go ahead and scream and run!” --- Mike Myers
May I also point out that this film won a 2003 Razzie award for "Worst Excuse For An Actual Movie." In addition, the rumors are now circulating that the next Dr. Seuss book that will be adapted will be GREEN EGGS & HAM in 2006...let's just hope that it will be more like the THE GRINCH and not like this travesty.
