The Kerrigan family are just your typical Australian family. Dad Darryl, mum Sal, daughter Tracy and sons Wayne, Steve & Dale. Their house, which was built on an industrial waste landfill site, is a mess, they aren't verywell educated, they have appalling taste and they have a family member in prison. Sorry, if I've offended any Aussies out there. But the main thing about the Kerrigans is their love for each other and their home, which is both very real and very strong. So when the Airport, who's runway is at the bottom of the garden, want to expand onto their land, do the Kerrigans accept the generous offer of cash for their house? No they don't! They hunker down for a fight. They go to their inept solicitor, the one who unsuccessfully defended Wayne, to try to sue the Airport. By a quirk of fate, a very famous barrister agrees to help them in their fight for justice. So will the Kerrigan's save their home? Will they lose? Will Wayne get early parole? All these questions will be answered when you do the decent thing and rent this movie from you nearest video rental establishment.
~Cast~
Michael Caton............Darryl Kerrigan Anne Tenney..............Sal Kerrigan Stephen Curry............Dale Kerrigan Anthony Simcoe...........Steve Kerrigan Sophie Lee...............Tracy Kerrigan Wayne Hope...............Wayne Kerrigan Tiriel Mora..............Dennis Denuto Eric Bana................Con Petropoulous Charles 'Bud' Tingwell...Lawrence Hammill
You might recognise (or not) some of the cast from The Castle. Eric Bana who play's Con, the Kickboxing fanatic fiance of Tracy, played the marvellous Mark "Chopper" Read in the movie Chopper. Sophie Lee was one of the bitchy girls in Muriel's Wedding. Anthony Simcoe is unrecognisable as D'Argo in the TV series Farscape. Michael Caton was one of the Sullivans (see below) and will be seen in Rob Schneider's new comedy, The Animal.
I love this film, I think it's so funny and heart-warming. Even though the Kerrigans are as thick as the proverbial planks, you can't help but warm to them. Son Steve always reads out weird and wacky things that people are selling in the Trading Post (which I assume is the antipodean Exchange & Mart), to which his dad always asks the price and even though he knows nothing about whatever the product is (kind of like me on Ciao), he suggests the seller is "dreaming". Also just wait for Dad Darryl's speech on the "serenity" of their holiday home while the fly-killer does it's job in the background, just inspired.
I really like Darryl's love for his wife's cooking where he always tells her how good it is, then asks what it is, even though it's usually obvious what it is, and when she tells him, he asks what she's done to it? My favourite example:
Darryl: This is marvellous darl', what is it? Sal: Ice Cream. Darryl: Yeah, but what have you done with it? Sal: Scooped it out the punnet!
The whole film is littered with little amusing moments like that. This is not a gross-out comedy with bodily fluids a plenty, this is gentle humour driven by the characters and the situations. Luckily in England we are more attune with Aussie slang and dialect due to the fact that our children are brought up on a diet of Neighbours and Home & Away. I myself was very fond of The Sullivans on a skive off school day.
~Conclusion~
One of the best Aussie comedies and easily beats Crocodile Dundee in my opinion. Real feel-good stuff to sit down with a couple of tinnies. Maybe wait until The Dish is released and then get them both out and do a double bill as they were both made by the same writing/directing team.
Advantages: Very funny, heartwarming, something for everyone to watch Disadvantages: It is looking a tad dated these days
...and directed by Rob Sitch the Castle is a modern classic. In the same way as Clerks this film had a budget of 0p but yet is so much better than many that cost millions.
I like the other reviwers had the Castle forced upon me by an Aussie mate who thought it was up there with the likes of Monty Python in terms of humour, so I bought it and watched it, and loved it!
The Story
The Castle tells the story of the Kerrigan family. Headed up by Dad Darryl ... ...culinary delights...Steve, eldest brother of the mob, currently serving time for armed robbery. Trace, the only girl in the family who became her dads proudest ever moment when she graduated from the Sunshine Tate school for hair and beauty. Steve Kerrigan is a finder of interesting products in the local free papers, which he ineviatbaly manages to get at knock down prices. For killer items such as jowsting sticks he's your man...and last but not ...

Advantages: great self-deprecating Aussie humour, uplifting Disadvantages: some jokes might not travel well
...after seeing it however that The Castle is a little gem of a film – combining biting satire with an inevitably uplifting conclusion.
The films centres around the Kerrigans, a stereotypical blue collar family living somewhere in suburban Australia. Their lives and ambitions can best be described as simple, but when their home is threatened by airport expansion plans they are forced into taking on the interests of big business to protect their rights. ... ...is their castle.
While the story is straightforward and predictable it is the human angle that gives this film its charm. The Kerrigans are a true ‘bogan’ family and most of the comedy derives from poking fun at their definite lack of sophistication. Indeed the film provides viewers with a host of hilarious catch-phrases which neatly sum this up, although admittedly some references may not be fully appreciated by those outside Australasia. But while ...

...and although i've enjoyed all the many aussie films I've seen, this has to be top of the list. Created by a team that later created The Dish, the storyline is based around a typical Australian family the Kerrigans (after seeing this you may not think this is true, but with discussions with australians on the film, it is much, much more like real aussie life than stuff like Neighbours). The Kerrigans live literally next door to an airport, the runway ... ...them it's much more - the title of the film coming from the fact that "a man's home's his castle". They have pride in everything, any of the family does even if to anyone else it would seem very trivial - Mrs Kerrigan's cooking, middle son Steve's enterprising inventions (and love for bargains) ("he's an ideas man Steve"), even youngest son - and narrator - Dale's news that he dug a hole, gains respect among the family.
Then one day they receive ...

"The Castle" is the funniest aussie movie I think I have ever seen.....and I should know about Australian movies, being an aussie myself! This is an absolute treasure! I actually have it on VHS AND the 'poolroom edition dvd' which is boxed in a green velvet case to look like a pool table...if you have seen the movie you will know the importance of 'the pool room' Everything of great family value eg- Hand made mugs or ashtrays, goes 'straight to the ... ...the song 'We're goin' to Bonnidoon'. :-)
This is a hilarious movie about Darryl Kerrigan, a man who happily resides in the suburbs literally next door to the airport, with everything he wants, until developers threaten to bulldoze the area for a new runway. Darryl decides to dig in and fight to preserve his castle and his way of life.
This really is a fantastic movie and you will find yourself watching many times over and still laughing just as ...

Advantages: Now a cult love story, with wonderful performances and dazzling ice skating sequences Disadvantages: Story is rather cliched, and most males won't be amused
bring to ICE CASTLES the romantic touchstone, and those that love the film should get the soundtrack; yes, believe it or not, but it is still available. You can order it from www.Amazon.com on Arista Records for only 5 quid or less; the ASIN number is B000002VDG. However, the availability of ICE CASTLES on VHS or DVD seems to be minimal; when I went to Amazon, it only had the soundtrack and Region 1 DVD listed. In this situation, though, you simply cannot go wrong with Ebay, or better yet, for those of you who are still unsure if you would enjoy this, check with some local video shops. Thank you very much for reading, I?m happy to be writing again on Ciao, and my next review will be posted Saturday night (Aug. 1) and it will be on the new thriller THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. Take care all and look forward to all your comments, as usual! Chris ...

Advantages: Good Story, excellent animation Disadvantages: Rather dated soundtrack
does contain a few extra features a stills gallery and a couple of trailers for two other Anime films Akira, Ghost in the Shell and X: The Movie all more recent and none by Hayao Miyazaki. The interactive menu and choices of dub or subtitles are fairly standard. One further thing to mention is the excellent quality of the transfer onto DVD the original film has been re mastered and it looks brilliant the colours and sound looking just like new. Whatever is on offer though the fact is that COC is worth buying simply for the film and it does have that all important 'repeat watchability' aspect that will ensure it is a good value addition to your or your kids DVD collection.
At the time of this review 'The Castle Of Cagliostro' can be bought from Amazon.co.uk for £8.97 (+p&p) and I would highly recommend it!
