Frankie (Dyer) is a young kid on the un from the South London flats. He winds up in Malaga on an errand for an East-End gangster. He meets Charlie (Tamer Hassan) a smooth 80s playboy, and soon becomes part of his gang, entering a life of sex, drugs and violence.
The film's director, Nick Love, has gone to great lengths to keep the film looking authentically 80s, from the clothes and cars to the fantastic soundtrack. Love manages to make the gang's lifestyle look glamorous and exciting without really condoning drugs or violence (it is ultimately drugs which causes the lead characters downfall in the end.) nor does he preach about anything: the film isn't supposed to be a social commentary on the debauchery of the 80s, simply a heightened "slice of life".
The way the film has been shot is also interesting. For example, in the "making of" documentary, Love explains that, everything at the beginning of the film when Frankie arrives in Malaga is shot so that everything looks impossibly colourful and vibrant, but the moment the characters take cocaine, the film is dullened right down to a dreary grey colour when they've hit rock bottom at the end.
This is a fantastic film of it's genre. If you don't like gangster films steer well clear: the characters all use the 'c' word very liberally. I'm not a prude atall, don't mind the odd bit of swearing, but the exhaustive swearing in this movie does become a bit distracting after a while. Unfortunately, my main criticism with this film is the amount of - I have to say - quite unapologetic misogynism: there is not one female character in the movie who isn't a slut, a devious, manipulative bitch or a foul-mouthed old east-end slapper.
That said, there is something for everyone here, both my boyfriend and I loved the film - him because of the cool 80s cockney wideboy stuff, and me because Danny Dyer spends most of the time in shorts!! ;-)

Really? wow, I became a fan of Danny Dyer when I got into Football Factory and its following programme stories on youtube where he'd go into actual 'firm' club pubs hehe. Gotta see this now.
