Withnail and I - I've written a review by mistake!
Review of Withnail And I (Wide Screen) by  david_1967

Advantages: Brilliant script, wonderful acting and copious amount of alcohol
Disadvantages: Just can't keep up with the drinking game!

...as natural to the two actors. This DVD release comes complete with an uncut version of the film supervised by director of photography Peter Hannon and a commentary by Paul McGann and Ralph Brown.  It also contains a newly created 5.1 surround sound track which doesn't really add any further depth to the film in my opinion.  There is also a 1999 documentary made for US television detailing the making of the film and the actors recollections of their time spent on it (and away from it). If you've never seen this film then you are sorely missing out on what is a truly hilarious 108 minutes of British comedy from the writer of 'The Killing Fields' as Bruce Robinson puts to script what is often referred to as semi-autobiographical.  It is a seminal movie and is truly regarded as a 'classic'.This review is also posted on Dooyoo.... ON A MISSION FROM GOD
Review of The Blues Brothers (Wide Screen) by  GeoffreyHawkins

Advantages: One of the best comedies of all time, excellent documentary
Disadvantages: No commentary

...John Landis is famous for many comedies including Animal House, Trading Places, and Coming to America. Arguably his best movie though is the Blues Brothers. Not only is this an excellent comedy, but it is also a great action film and one of the most memorable musicals. The film cost a huge $27 million to make back in 1980, which was a huge investment at the time. At the box office it made $80 million and since then it must have made a few extra quid considering its still huge popularity. You can now be the proud owner of this masterpiece on DVD. Don’t bother wasting your time on the odd TV appearance of the film, or the old skool VHS version, get yourself a DVD player and get this. CAST JOHN BELUSHI – Jake Blues DAN AYKROYD – Elwood Blues JAMES BROWN – Reverend Cleophus James CAB CALLOWAY – Curtis RAY... Read review

DVD Description

Andrew Crocker-Harris (Albert Finney), a teacher of Greek and Latin at a private school, is dubbed the 'Hitler of the Lower Sixth' by his students. His rigidity and cruelty are the sad remnants of an extinguished passion for classical literature. But as he is poised to leave the school--forced into retirement by the headmaster and made a cuckold of by the infidelities of his wife Laura (Greta Scacchi)--Crocker-Harris finds his love for learning rekindled by the interest and sympathy of a young student named Taplow (Ben Silverstone), who gives him Robert Browning's translation of Aeschylus' AGAMEMNON as a parting gift. Based on a Terence Rattigan play, THE BROWNING VERSION is a character study that finds pathos in British stodginess and makes a subdued plea for the nobility of teaching. Finney is the powerful centre of the film, portraying a man whom time and opportunity have passed by. As humiliations are piled upon his character, Finney registers nothing but silent resignation, even as he ratchets up his stoicism to face the next disappointment.

Fantastic Film
Review of Tom Brown's Schooldays DVD by  bellmj

Advantages: Learn how things used to be.
Disadvantages: See the harsh punishment which is slightly grueling.

...Since this was made, there have been some other very good movie versions of the story, but this adaptation of "Tom Brown's School Days" is still worth seeing. It has a good cast and good atmosphere, with effective story-telling. Arnold is well cast and is a stern headmaster of the boys rugby school. Three most important characters are Tom, his friend East and then the brutal bully flashman who is older than them and every bit harsher. In the films there are times when you feel that you are pulled into the place of the young lad. Their boyish loyalties, threats, fears, sadness, rivalries and misunderstandings all come across truly believable. It is set at a rugby school where Tom doesn't immediatley fit in. He has one boy on his side called East. He later becomes good friends with Tom. Flashman shows his brutality many times during... Read review

There should have been only one
Review of Highlander 1 by  Tyler-Durden

Advantages: Great 80s classic
Disadvantages: None

...This is an 80's action adventure film with plenty of sword fighting and beheading. I missed this one at the cinema and must of seen it countless times on video and now DVD. Its stars Christopher Lambert as an immortal, who with the help of Sean Connery must battle Clancy Brown (as of the best 80's bad guys). There are a limited number of these immortals who can only die by being beheaded. They battle each other across the ages, as one is killed his soul/energy is given to his killer. The final one left alive can claim the ultimate prize. The film plays out as flashbacks to Connor Mc Cloud (Lambert) down the ages from Scotland (middle ages) thru WW2, to the present day and the final battle of the gathering The soundtrack of the film is by Queen (don't let that put you off !!) and complements the film perfectly. A great film... Read review

Nanny McPhee - DVD
Review of Nanny McPhee DVD by  allyoxley

Advantages: Brilliant Story-line, Great Entertainment and all round Family film to watch time after time
Disadvantages: There are none except I wish it was a lot longer as you don't want it to end

...Emma Thompson as Nanny McPhee Colin Firth as Mr Brown The film is based on a widowed father (Colin Firth) who has 7 children who absolutely hate nannies looking after them, they will go to any length to have their nannies leave and feel they are big enough to cope on their own, even though they are the most mis-behaved children going. In total they have managed to chase 17 nannies from their house, and when Mr Brown goes back to the nanny agency to hire another he is told there are no more, that is until a knock on the door late at night brings Nanny McPhee to the house, a nanny with a difference. This is an up-to-date version of Mary Poppins, and if you loved that then you will love this even better. Its a modern fairytale of love, magic and fantasy and the way it is presented is just out of this world. Its on the edge viewing... Read review
