Quietly powerful and thoroughly credible Waller's first novel (he previously wrote two ... more
books of essays) describes the profound love between a photographer and an Iowa farmer's wife who together for only four days never lose their feelings for each other. In August 1965 52-year-old divorce Robert Kincaid packs his pickup truck and travels to Iowa's Madison County the location of seven covered bridges he is to photograph for National Geographic . There he asks directions of Francesca Johnson alone at home while her husband and two children visit the Illinois State Fair. Initially neither Robert nor Francesca expects their random encounter to lead to seduction yet their mutual desire is undeniable. Waller tells their story as though it were nonfiction claiming to have heard about Francesca from her children after her death read her journals seen Robert's relics of those four days and interviewed a jazz musician who knew the photographer. Scenes between the lovers are movingly evoked and moments with Francesca who celebrates her birthday 22 years later by reflecting on her brief time with Robert are particularly poignant. An erotic bittersweet tale of lingering memories and forsaken possibilities. Photos of covered bridges serve as illustrations.

I have already written a full review on the video version of this film, but as I recently treat myself to the DVD version, I thought it was only right that I let you know whether or not the DVD is worth it. **THE FILM** Basically, the film is a love story about a relationship that was never meant to be between travelling National Geographic photographer Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood), and homely farmwife Francesca Johnson (Meryl Streep). The story is based in the 1960's, and depicts a chance meeting between the two characters when Robert arrives in Iowa to photograph a famous set of bridges. The chemistry between the two is apparent from the first moment they meet, and as Francesca's husband and children are out of town, there is no physical presence to prevent the two from embarking on a passionate short lived love affair. Their time together makes Francesca realise that she has not been living her life for her, and having Robert pay so much attention to her makes her reassess her life and goals. The personal revelations are not one sided. Robert never expected to meet someone who could awaken him in the way Francesca does.
The bond between the two develops quickly, and overpowers them both. Robert knows he has to leave Iowa, but he asks Francesca to leave her family and come with him. Does she? You really did not think I would put in a spoiler that big did you??
The story carries on many years later when Francesca and Robert are dead, and their affair is relived through the eyes of her adult children who are going through some of her papers and diaries shortly after her death, and they also find that the information they are presented with makes them look at their lives, and decide whether they are living them in a way that makes them happy. They also rethink their memories of their mother, and try to deal with the fact that she was not the docile wife and mother that they remembered her as, until the really look deeper and realise what a brave and loyal woman she was, and someone they should be unreservedly proud of.
Clint Eastwood is not really one of my favourite actors, but in this film he smoulders in every scene, and the emotion portrated just by a look is more strengthened by the fact that he was also the director. As an avid book reader, I am pleased to say that this is actually a film which has not lost any of the magic given to the story by the book by Robert James Waller. Eastwood and Streep are at their best in these roles, and neither of them have gripped me in the same way in any of the countless roles they have played before or after this film. They made me connect to the characters, and I felt every ounce of pain they did, and the story had a real impact on me because the performances were warm, and most importantly for this story they were wholly realistic. The film is 2 hours and 15 minutes long, and more than half of that is certainly tear jerking, heart rending viewing.
***THE DVD*** There are subtitles available in English, French and Spanish on the Region 2 version I have, and I am afraid to say that the extras on this DVD are virtually non existent. From the main menu, you can view details of the cast members, and this is purely pictures of them with their names and a small biography on each of them. You can view the producers notes, and all they are, are screens full of notes from Clint Eastwood. It is hardly gripping stuff, and finally there is something called a film flash, which is Warner Bros way of promoting some of their other releases.
I was so disappointed with the DVD, and had I not been actively changing my video collection over to DVD, I would have been furious at paying out for a carbon copy of something I already had. Stick with the video unless you are streamlining like I was.
Advantages: An Emotional Journey Disadvantages: Implausible Accent By Meryl Streep.
The Bridges of Madison County is a film set in the heart of rural Iowa, in a place where everyone knows everyone, and where family values are paramount. Sprawling farms stretch into the distance, carving lives into boxes and days into duties. People are happy within what they know, they have structure, but there is precious little time for feelings and emotions in this demanding environment. Based on the novel by Robert James Walker. Meryl Streep ... ...Robert Kincaid, a photographer for The National Geographic, who is sent to Iowa to photograph the covered bridges, famous in the area for their unique style and appearance. The film is based around the love affair which ignites between these two. The drama takes place during the days when Francesca's husband goes away with their family to the County show for 4 days, where they are to exhibit their prize steer. Robert calls at the house for directions ...

Advantages: Nice location shots, a change from more youthful driven romance films Disadvantages: Too long, too heavy, too dreary
Time to fly in the face of popular opinion and voice the fact I didn't enjoy the Bridges of Madison County, surely sacrilege in the eyes of the Oprah generation. I first saw this film, made 1995, on the television and no doubt it will now do the full circle of television seasons. Clint Eastwood both stars and directs this film based on the book by Robert James Waller which I have not read nor feel compelled to now. His leading lady is Hollywood stalwart ... ...an Italian who came to the states when she met an American soldier in her homeland. The Johnsons live in an isolated and rural area of Iowa. It is soon made clear that theirs is a life of structure which can be at times claustrophobic. We join Francesca as she is left in the solitude of her home whilst her husband and children go on a trip to the state fair which will see them from home for over four days. Robert Kincaid (Eastwood) finds himself ...

Advantages: Unbearably tense at the climax Disadvantages: Not quite as fully finished as the book
Forget the fact that this is Meryl Street and Clint Eastwod. Forget the fact the Meryl is stuck in one of her accents that obviously isn't her own, because we know who she is so well. Forget the fact that Clint just sticks with his strong silent type character. This is a fabulous film.
Some might say that it is a love story. I think it is a story about a mid-life crisis. Meryl's family all drive off on a family jaunt for a few days, and she is left ... ...notes, flowers and dancing in the kitchen. Such things as dreams are made of. But then she has to decide between her home/husband/children and a life with this stranger. Hubby comes back while Clint is still in town. The rain lashes down, and she has to choose which car to get into. Legendary direction! I cried and cried.
Woo! I'd better calm down! I love this film. I also love the book. Try it. ...

Advantages: Beautiful love story Disadvantages: Can't think of any.
...just got round to buying the DVD. There aren't any special features worth mentioning on the DVD, but that wasn't why I wanted it. When I came to pay for it, the guy behind the counter said that he's never been able to decide if he fell more in love with Meryl Streep or Clint Eastwood after watching this movie, and I have to say I agree. Eastwood plays Robert Kincaid, a photographer from the National Geographic, travelling through Iowa when he stops ... ...Her family is away for the week, so Francesca decides to show him where he needs to go, and then invites him to join her for dinner. Neither of them expect what happens next - they fall in love, more deeply than either knew was possible, even though they know they can never be together. This is a beautiful love story, that will melt the heart of even the most reluctant viewer. There are some beautiful shots of the US countryside in this movie, and ...
