Matt Damon is Jason Bourne in the first of (currently) two films that follow the lead character's journey of self discovery after falling victim to amnesia and waking up with a bullet ridden body, an alarming propensity to easy violence and the access code to a Swiss safety deposit box. Without giving too much of the plot away, there are fights and chases (including a great car chase through Paris) and a bit of romance as Bourne tries to find out who he is, who he was and who is trying to kill him.
The Bourne Identity is based on the first of 4 novels written by Robert Ludlum and featuring the exploits of Jason Bourne although it differs in many respects from the version on the printed page. However it was clearly a labour of love for director Doug Liman (who had previously directed Swingers and Go and has recently gone on to have a big hit with Mr and Mrs Smith) who formed a close relationship with the author during the making of the film. This has helped greatly with the characterisation within the movie and has also allowed thought into aspects such as the method of fighting that a trained assasin would use (brutal but with economy of energy and movement) and how they would react under pressure (calm and practical hence the constant references to maps and planning even when being chased)
The acting is top notch with Matt Damon re-asserting his star quality after a few ropey choices and flinging himself into most of the stunts and fight sequences which allowed many to be filmed realistically. Franka Potente has more character and is a slightly unconventional beauty for the love interest while Brian Cox, Chris Cooper and Clive Owen all make the most of smaller parts.
This is the second version of the film to hit DVD and although it does provide some extra information such as some deleted scenes and a taster for the next film, the Bourne Supremecy, it loses the director's commentary from the original release that was, unusually, both informative and entertaining.
All in all though this is top class action and a personal favourite and yes I do have both DVD versions!

...what is he? That is the central premise of this first class action movie, it is a story of a man's journey to discover his identity after he regains conciousness aboard a fishing vessel and realises he knows nothing whatsoever about himself, apart from an account number and the address of a Swiss bank that are in a device implanted in his body, (along with two bullets). The film really shifts gear once Bourne reaches Switzerland and not only finds ... ...information in the deposit box at the bank. He meets up with Marie and she agrees to take him to Paris where the action is almost nonstop. The Car chase through Paris is excellently directed and adds to the overall suspense of the film. This is a first class action movie that is well written and acted, , this is a film to watch and enjoy, the performances are uniformly good and there is an excellent cameo from Brian Cox but he is underused in his ...

Advantages: Provides the Viewer with a suspensful opening. Disadvantages: Can be seen as confusing.
This film is one of the greats of the 21st century, i recommend this film to any lover of espionage/spy films, guns, high speed action or Matt Damon. I liked this film due to the action element, this film however was very close to losing the storyline amidst shoot-outs, high speed chases and other high quality fight scenes. This film is well directed, well produced and most of all the cast give a good acting performance. I would give this film 8.5/10 ... ...too confusing for their taste. The aspects I liked were: The storyline is good as the viewer never knows more than Matt Damon so it's not like a tedious inevitabilty, I also like the opening five minutes as I think this is the most important thing in a new movie, so that the audience doesn't feel like dying before the movies even got into the main storyline. The things I didn't like: I didn't like the fact that in someways there is a repitition of ...

DVD Description
As THE BOURNE IDENTITY begins, a man who may or may not be Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is found floating in the Mediterranean Sea and is hauled onto a fishing boat. When the ship's doctor examines the unconscious castaway, he discovers two bullet wounds and an implanted device that displays a Swiss bank account number. With nothing but this code, the amnesiac Bourne travels to Zurich and gains access to a safe-deposit box containing a gun, thousands of dollars in various currencies, and valid passports from numerous countries--each listing a different identity. Within minutes, Bourne is on the run from a seemingly ever-present agency, relying on language and fighting skills he didn't even know he possessed. Offering $20,000 for a ride to Paris, Bourne gains the reluctant help of the nomadic Marie (Franka Potente). Meanwhile, the shadowy organization, headed by a tough-talking bureaucrat (Chris Cooper), sends numerous assassins (including the Professor, played by Clive Owen) after Bourne and Marie. As their situation grows more perilous, the two strangers struggle to find out who Bourne really is and why they are being hunted. Doug Liman's adaptation of Robert Ludlum's best-selling novel is a remarkable exercise in straightforward storytelling, with the director wisely choosing to focus on Bourne and his quest for identity. The fight sequences are thrilling, but never overly glamorized, and the film's pacing is engaging and deliberate. Damon, who displays genuine bewilderment as his character discovers his almost-superhuman abilities, anchors the proceedings with the subtle charm of an unlikely action hero. Potente also shines as Bourne's road companion, a savvy woman who slowly builds an utterly believable relationship with the confused man. Bearing distinct affinity for its European setting and classic Hollywood suspense films, THE BOURNE IDENTITY succeeds as an unusually smart character-driven thriller.
