* PLOT *
A man's battered body is found by an Italian fisherman in a river and is taken by him and nursed back to health. As he awakens on the fisherman's boat he can remember nothing. He doesn't know who he is, how he got on this boat and what has happened to him. This man the audience discovers is Jason Bourne (Matt Damon). Jason has suffered an attack and has lost his memory of who he is and where he is from. As he wonders the city and looks through what he has on him and he soon realises that he is being hunted down and followed by the CIA and that he has hidden abilities to survive. He finds a lot of suspicious items on him and in his bank account including guns and a lot of passports. Jason befriends Marie (Potente) who tries to help him remember who he is. Jason and Marie are on the run as men follow his tracks. They go to Paris where he scours for clues about his past and to find those responsible for the way he is.
* CAST *
Jason Bourne- Matt Damon
Jason Bourne is a very strong minded character. Even though he has no memory of who he is he keeps positive and is a very clever man. Matt Damon is a successful American actor who has played along side leading stars such as Ben Affleck, George Clooney and Julia Styles. The Bourne Indentity gave Matt a boost in his carer and he made a lot more interesting and victorious films after this was released. Other films he has been in before this are- Dogma (1999), Ocean's Eleven (2001) and Gerry (2002). Since the release of the Bourne film he has starred in big hits such as- Ocean's Twelve (2004), The Brother's Grimm (2004) and The Departed (2006).
Marie- Franka Potente
The German actress plays Marie a lead part in The Bourne Indentity. Marie's character shows that she is a very determined and strong character. She shows a fondness for Jason even though he is a stranger to her. There is fantastic chemistry between Marie and Jason. Franka who is a success in German films has grown in reputation and has started starring in English films. Some films that I have seen starring her are- Run Lola Run (1998) and Creep (2004) other wise her films consist of German ones.
Nicky Parsons- Julia Stiles
Nicky is an interesting character and has a strange connection with Jason. Her character develops through out the film and into the other two. We get to know more about her and what she does. Julia is a well known actress with a lot of experience for young women in this carer. Some of her films include- 10 things I hate about you (1999), Save the last dance (2001) and Mona Lisa Smile (2003). The character is played very well by her and I think was a perfect choice of actress.
The Professor- Clive Owen
Even though The Professor is not a main character in the film he has an important scene where he tries hunting down Jason. Clive Owen is a well known actor in film and also television, so it was nice to see him play a small part rather than a man in character. The Professor is hired to try sniper Jason out when he hides away in the country. Clive Owen has acted in huge hits such as- Children of men (2006); Shoot them up (2007) and Sin City (2005).
Other cast members-
Conklin- Chris Cooper Ward Abbott- Brian Cox Wombosi- Adewale Akinnuuoye-Agbaje Zorn- Gabriel Mann Eamon- Tim Dutton
* VIEWS *
Being one of my favourite films I really enjoyed watching it when it came out on DVD. The film is one of the best action films I had seen in a long time. It was original, classy and well put together to create an exciting and entertaining piece. The acting by Matt Damon is spot on. He is interesting to watch especially as he has not had such a major star role on his own before. I found Jason's character great to watch as he had to go through different emotions and events straight after each other. Coping with a memory loss, being shot and coping with sexual tension between him and Marie it is interesting seeing the switch between them all very quickly. Matt Damon was the perfect choice for Jason Bourne's role as I think before this film I didn't think Matt Damon was very attractive at all. Matt really looks good in the film and he is not a pretty boy like some of holly woods most famous actors which is better as choosing one of this other actor's would properly have made the role abit cheesy.
The scenes are efficiently done, the scenes are fast paced and are filled with exciting martial arts and fights which keep the pace of the film quick which I think intrigues the audience and keeps them watching. I didn't get bored at all any time during the film and felt very satisfied with the content and the performance from all of the actors. The action was very personal and up close and after watching a documentary from Liman he said that he used a lot of the action scenes using a hand held camera to get up close with the fights, which I think defiantly made it more intimate and gets the audience involved. The car chases do go on for abit long which properly could have been chopped down abit but it was interesting as the chases were in the city of Paris which gave them plenty of places and scenarios to use.
When The Bourne Identity was released by Universal it received good reception. In the opening weekend it grossed - $27,118,640 in the US and altogether world wide it grossed- &213,925,107. A lot of film critics and film review websites had a positive attitude toward the film and classed it as- 'exciting action'. The film won several awards during 2003 including- Top Box Office Film and Outstanding Achievement in Fight Choreography.

Liman approached other actors before Matt Damon like Russell Crowe and Sylvester Stallone but didn't feel they had the right image and connection to the plot. The director said that Matt understood that even though it was an action packed combat film it was more about the narrative of a man loosing his memory than the fighting scenes which was why he was chosen.
* RECOMMEND *
I would defiantly recommend this film to anyone who likes action / thriller films. The film targets a wide ranged audience as it as aspects for all kinds of people. The action and fight scenes are exciting and brilliantly done and the chase scenes are interesting and use new tactics and situations that I have not seen in any other action movie. The film consists of an unusual narrative and includes a love sub plot to keep the females interested. The chemistry between the actors is fantastic and the emotions are done well that you really fell for Jason when he goes through hell to find out who he is. One of the best action films I have seen by far.

In 1980, the world was introduced to a new superspy known only as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Identity.” This crackling novel by Robert Ludlum about a man with amnesia but is now a target by several assassins became a runaway bestseller, and even spawned two follow-up books. When he arrives at the bank, he finds a safe deposit box filled with currency, passports and other articles; after he unexpectedly ...

Ah, the spy. After finishing The Bourne Supremacy last week I decided that it was probably best to go back and start at the beginning of the series. So I bought myself a copy of The Bourne Identity and sat down on Tuesday night and started reading. Almost a week later and I’ve just out the book onto my shelf having finished it. Advantages: Loss of memory action spy adventure story with loads of twists Disadvantages: Concentration required to keep up with the plot.
Robert Ludlum writes exciting, fast moving spy thrillers with well drawn characters, and he does it so well you do not want to put the book down.
I was very interested to see how this translated to the big screen, particularly as I always read a book before seeing a film made from it.
The BourneIdentity is the first of a trilogy and opens with Jason Bourne suffering from complete memory loss. Worse, someone is trying to kill him and he does not know who or why.
As the movie unfolds he gradually works out that he must have been an assassin and he learns to deal with that knowledge and his pursuers. A strong love interest is added to the mix without overdue sentiment - it defintely adds to the suspense rather than detract. I won't go any futher into the plot because it will spoil your enjoyment.

I got the BourneIdentity and the Bourne Supremacy DVD boxset the other day and I haven't watched the Bourne Supremacy yet but I did watch the BourneIdentity yesterday afternoon so I thought I'd post a hopefully fairly quick review on that, for anyone thinking about buying it as a catchup on the Bourne movies before going to see the new Bourne movie, the Bourne Ultimatum, in the cinema this month.

If you are a Matt Damon fan, then you will love this film. I love films concerning memory loss and the character trying to find out who he is etc... I have both movies on DVD and I can watch them over again and again. The BourneIdentity Starts out with Bourne floating in the sea.. He is saved and wakes up with no memory of who he is or why he was out in the sea. The movie then moves on with small bits of memory and a bank account number found in his leg. This leads him all across Europe. Who is he, what does he do for a living... All this is what he wants to do. With him trying to find out his Identity, he then finds the US government after him for what he does not know why..
The story is a fast one, the car chase in the mini is brilliant... Matt Damon looks like he maybe moving into Action / Adventure with this movie and he pulls it ...
Having been washed up on a beach with amnesia and bullet wounds, Jason Bourne sets out to regain his identity, even having to face the prospect that he might have been a professional terrorist and killer. Action tale based on Robert Ludlum's best-selling book.

DVD Description
As THE BOURNE IDENTITY begins, a man who may or may not be Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is found floating in the Mediterranean Sea and is hauled onto a fishing boat. When the ship's doctor examines the unconscious castaway, he discovers two bullet wounds and an implanted device that displays a Swiss bank account number. With nothing but this code, the amnesiac Bourne travels to Zurich and gains access to a safe-deposit box containing a gun, thousands of dollars in various currencies, and valid passports from numerous countries--each listing a different identity. Within minutes, Bourne is on the run from a seemingly ever-present agency, relying on language and fighting skills he didn't even know he possessed. Offering $20,000 for a ride to Paris, Bourne gains the reluctant help of the nomadic Marie (Franka Potente). Meanwhile, the shadowy organization, headed by a tough-talking bureaucrat (Chris Cooper), sends numerous assassins (including the Professor, played by Clive Owen) after Bourne and Marie. As their situation grows more perilous, the two strangers struggle to find out who Bourne really is and why they are being hunted. Doug Liman's adaptation of Robert Ludlum's best-selling novel is a remarkable exercise in straightforward storytelling, with the director wisely choosing to focus on Bourne and his quest for identity. The fight sequences are thrilling, but never overly glamorized, and the film's pacing is engaging and deliberate. Damon, who displays genuine bewilderment as his character discovers his almost-superhuman abilities, anchors the proceedings with the subtle charm of an unlikely action hero. Potente also shines as Bourne's road companion, a savvy woman who slowly builds an utterly believable relationship with the confused man. Bearing distinct affinity for its European setting and classic Hollywood suspense films, THE BOURNE IDENTITY succeeds as an unusually smart character-driven thriller.
