The Bone Collector
THe Bone Collector is a 1999 drama-mystery-thriller film starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. It doesn't actually seem like it was made 10 years ago now as I think it is still quite an up to date and current movie.
Ange plays a similar sort of role for her, pretty girl but tough with a bit of an edge. She gets to show her sexy and adventurous side but also a vunerable side too. She is a police officer, like her deceased father who is not really mentioned but you can see that he is definitely her idol. She is just a routine beat cop called Amelia Donaghy but a chance finding of a crime scene on a routine day changes the direction of her career and life forever. This is when she meets and teams up with Lincoln Rhyme.
Rhyme is played by Denzel Washington. At first I thought the pairing of these two was quite weird and was not sure that it was going to work but them seem to have a chemistry between them and learn to work together well. I think they almost develop a sort of father daughter relationship in the beginning but them by the end they seem to have more of a loving relationship. It's interesting to see how this develops throughout the film. I did not know this but according to an article I read, "The movie was based on a crime novel written by Jeffery Deaver, concerning the quadriplegic detective Lincoln Rhyme. It was the first book of the Lincoln Rhyme series."
Rhyme is an ex forensics expert who was in an accident on the job and now is a quadriplegic. I thought this was an interesting story route for the film to go down, why they decided to confine him to a bed is strange and a different way to tell the story but definitely compelling. It's easy to see that Rhyme is depressed and wants to end his life now as he thinks he has nothing to live for but then this case comes along and it piques his interest again and suddenly he has something to live for.
The crime scene Amelia stumbles across is that of a serial killer who is known for his signature of removing a single shard of bone from each of the victims. From his bed Rhyme instructs Amelia on how to collect the evidence from the numerous crime scenes and then they both interpret the evidence. At each crime scene they find a scrap of paper which when put together reveals the shocking intent of the serial killer.
I liked the fact that this movie was a puzzles solver and that they had to piece together clues although the clues and their conclusions were nothing to viewer could piece together, you just had to let the characters do that for themselves unlike some mystery movies where you the viewer can piece two and two together to come up with the answer. In this was I felt like I was just watching the film rather than being part of it but that's not such a bad thing. I think the plot was a bit far fetched but then quite inventive and interesting. The film had quite a few jumps in it where you jump in fright at the suspense of some of the scenes and I really liked the way in which the film ended.

Advantages: Killer after fledgeling cop in dark alleys- if you like that genre, you'll doubtless love this Disadvantages: I feel the conclusion was ridiculous
