scientist known to his peers as "the world's foremost criminalist". Rhyme will need all his reason--and his considerable stock of high-tech tools--about him to solve this latest brain-twister: a serial killer with method to his madness. In tried and true thriller fashion, the killer's crimes are described in lurid detail, as is the astounding technological equipment with which Rhyme examines the evidence--everything from an energy-dispersive x-ray unit to a mass spectrometer. Every fictional detective has his or her gimmick, from Sherlock Holmes's violin to Nero Wolf's orchids, and Rhyme is no exception. He is a quadriplegic who can move nothing but a single finger. Gadget-philes will be in seventh heaven reading about Lincoln Rhyme's tools; other readers might feel the book could do with a few more plausible characters and a little less technology. --Amazon.com

Lincoln Rhyme is a brilliant New York City detective who specialises in forensics. Once one of the country’s leading criminologists, his career is brought abruptly to an end when a horrific accident almost kills him – and leaves him virtually paralysed. Policewoman Amelia Donaghy, on her last day as a street officer, is called to an incident on a piece of waste ground near a railway track, and discovers the horrifically mutilated body of a local business man part buried in the gravel. Her quick thinking and instincts enable her to record details of the crime scene before a rain shower washes the evidence away.
When his former colleagues bring the case to the attention of Rhyme, he is initially uninterested in the case and dismisses it as a simple ransom attempt. However, when he views the evidence assembled by Amelia he is intrigued further and impressed by the officer’s instinct and skill he requests that she is drafted to the case. Initially reluctant to join the case, the evidence left by the killer gradually absorbs Amelia. It seems that a serial killer is on the loose – and Amelia must act as Lincoln’s eyes and ears to bring the perpetrator to justice before he strikes again.
Released in 1999, Philip Noyce’s suspenseful thriller is a well-crafted piece of cinema. The film combines a number of elements with great success. You have the tragedy of Rhyme’s terrible accident and resulting state combined with the horrific police investigation that follows the so-called Bone Collector, and for me, the combination of the two was perfectly balanced. This is a genuinely unsettling film – the vulnerability of the killer’s victims, coupled with the horrific nature of their deaths makes for grisly viewing and I was quite surprised that this film was only a 15-certified movie.
The film bears certain similarities to the crime horror Se7en, in that the killer’s moves are all very carefully calculated and at each crime scene he leaves clues to lead the police further. You have this suspicion in the back of your mind that Rhyme is closer to the case then he first realises – but whether this is the case or not, I’ll let you find out for yourself. Despite the fact that the killings are less numerous than those seen in Se7en, the methods of despatch are similarly gruesome. Visually, the filmmakers leave more to the imagination, but I personally tend to find this more disturbing than outright gore – I find myself imagining how it would be to find oneself in similar circumstances. This is one of the most successful aspects of the film. New York is not portrayed as a bright, welcoming city – the dark, eerie settings show New York at its most nefarious and sinister.
Lincoln Rhyme’s character is portrayed as an obviously brilliant man. His ability to piece together evidence from the crime scene is compelling to watch, and utterly convincing. I have read reviews of the movie, which criticised Rhyme’s character as being just a bit too clever, but I thought there was a clear logic to his train of thought, and a man as experienced in the field as him would be likely to draw such conclusions. I also liked the way in which Rhyme was portrayed – it would have been very easy to set him up as a bitter individual with a chip on his shoulder. Instead he is shown as a warm person who, despite his natural arrogance, has a depth of character that inspires the crime scene personnel that assemble around him. Denzel Washington was probably perfectly cast in this role and does a sterling job.
In some ways, there is an argument to say that the whole serial killer idea has been done to death by Hollywood, and whilst The Bone Collector is good, it isn’t entirely original. Aside from the obvious similarities with Se7en, some of the elements of the story have been seen many times before. Lincoln is the classic Hollywood policeman. Despite his terrible injuries, the ability of his colleagues to re-awaken his interest in police work is phenomenal, and he is a Hollywood hero in every sense of the word. The acting police detective Captain Cheney is your archetypal obstructive ass hole, who ignores any sign of good work around him, and is almost as big a bad guy as the serial killer himself. The conclusion is disappointingly predictable – if not very satisfying – and I’d be surprised if you don’t work it out by the time you get there.
Where The Bone Collector shines is in the relatively new concepts that it brings to the genre. I thought the idea of the lead investigator being virtually paralysed added an interesting twist to things. Here we have a brilliant police officer and crime scene investigator who is utterly reliant upon technology and his colleagues to act as his ears and eyes. Amelia’s troubled young policewoman is nothing terribly new, but her initiation into the world of forensic science is very convincing. I liked the way that she didn’t become a superstar overnight, and showed that she was frightened – and above all human. All too often, these films have a tendency to turn normal people into superheroes in the space of about 10 minutes and its just not convincing. Both Amelia and Lincoln exhibit very strong personalities, and whilst there is an inevitable clash between the two, part of the flow of the story is the way in which the two individuals are drawn together.
Angelina Jolie stars as Amelia Donaghy and, for me anyway, was a strange casting choice. Jolie’s piercing eyes and stunning looks seem out of sorts with her character and setting, and whilst she was very well placed as Lara Croft, I’m not sure the same could be said here. To confound matters more, her beauty is clumsily brought into the movie by a newspaper clipping of the fact that she used to be a model as a teenager. I rather felt this was brought into the script because the writers knew that the audience simply wouldn’t accept that a policewoman could look this good. Her beauty is played down to a certain extent (no nude shower scenes) but her ability to look good in a blue jump suit tells me that she simply isn’t earthy enough for a role such as this.
Another surprising, although more positive, selection is the appearance of Queen Latifah as Rhyme’s loyal nurse, Thelma. At first, Thelma’s character seems gratuitous, but I soon warmed to having her around and eventually decided that she was a useful addition to the supporting cast. Fans of hip hop will recognise the name as a key player in music world, but you wouldn’t know it here – and unlike male equivalents who have made a similar migration to the movie world, she ditches the street attitude completely. Michael Rooker’s portrayal of the jealous police captain, Cheney, is suitably convincing – although with his face and voice, he would be hard-pressed to be anything other than unpleasant.
This film will appeal to many people. I found the forensic science elements very interesting, and the attention to detail made this a very convincing piece. The mystery is genuinely absorbing, and you will be kept alert right up until you find out what’s going on. Horror film fans would probably also like this – despite an absence of gratuitous gore, this is a horrific film nonetheless. It’s also a compelling character study – Lincoln and Amelia are interesting enough to keep things going all the way through. I also found the scenes of New York visually very impressive. Even now, there is something very disquieting about films in New York where the Twin Towers are still standing.
If there’s one thing I learnt from this movie, it was that you should avoid Yellow Cabs in New York like the plague – especially if the driver has something strange hanging from his rear view mirror……
Advantages: Good acting, good filming. Disadvantages: It failed to thrill me.
...and so I turned to the trusty movie on demand service from our digital company Telewest. The movie I’d ordered previously had turned out to be dreadful - a low budget horror yawn. I was determined to do better with my money this time and so I’d already decided to order “The Bone Collector”. I’d heard good reviews about it; it included a good set of actors and actresses as well as an established film crew.
The director, ... ...success with the twins “Clear and Present Danger” and “Patriot Games”. To be honest, I think that sort of action thriller is the best sort of genre for his style. I’m afraid that I didn’t really enjoy “The Bone Collector”.
The acting was first class. I doubt I would be able to poke too much criticism at either the quality of performances or cinematography. The two stars of the movie, for me, where ...

The Bone Collector. Yes it's just another by the numbers thriller with no new twists. Having said that it's still not bad as a piece of entertainment. Denzel Washington plays Lincoln Rhyme, an expert homicide detective who was victim of an accident while on the job that has left him quadriplegic and no longer active in the force. His life is pretty barren and he is considering ending it. Meanwhile on the streets of New York a young cop Amelia Donaghy ... ...Lincoln is brought in on the case and uses Amelia and his eyes and ears on the case as they try and track down the killer dubbed 'The Bone Collector'. So here we have the race against time to save victims, clever puzzle solving and of course the department chief who isn't too happy that his case is being taken over by a former colleague. Add to that some dark and gloomy atmosphere and some nasty killings and you have something that played out by ...

...great movie when I saw the cast list. I am not a big fan of (The increasingly typecast)Denzyl Washington and the idea of seeing him in yet another detective role didn’t exactly get the heart pounding with anticipation. Looking further down the list we come to Queen Latifah, a female rap artist whose usual role is to get shot within minutes of being introduced into a movie and then we move on to Ed O’Neill famous for playing Al Bundy in ... ...Furthermore, we have the old tired serial killer plot dragged out again but this time with yet another ‘novel’ twist to separate it from the rest. However, there was little else in the video store so I rented it anyway, on the off-chance that it might turn out better than it looked. Denzyl Washington plays Detective Lincoln Rhyme, a brilliant forensic invesitgator who is now a quadraplegic stuck in a hospital bed unable to move anything ...

track to accompany the film. There are a lot of epic themes and sometimes it's good to watch the battle scenes purely with music and nothing else.
Rounding out the dvd are some cast and crew biographies and trailers for Denzel Washington films 'The BoneCollector' and 'Devil In A Blue Dress'. Although for some reason the trailer for 'Glory' itself isn't on the dvd although from looking in IMDB.Com it seems that this piece of footage is in bad condition so maybe it was left out for quality purposes.
This is a very solid war film that doesn't force americanisms down peoples throats and just remains true to the subject matter. The dvd documentaries just make this an essential dvd to own. ...
