Despite my membership with Lovefilm, I still occasionally pick up the odd cheap DVD to have in reserve for when my rented films are in transit. As I was feeling a little delicate over the weekend following a few too many glasses of wine on Friday night, I took a dive into my reserve collection of films and plumped for The Bogus Witch Project, a series of spoofs of the infamous Blair Witch Project. Now if you've ever seen The Blair Witch Project, you'd think there was sufficient material to send up in a spoof horror. Unfortunately, the makers of The Bogus Witch Project seemed to struggle and instead have produced the most diabolical attempt at comedy horror that I have ever witnessed in my life.

Obviously having seen the original Blair Witch Project will give you a distinct advantage in watching The Bogus Witch Project but, even so, I found the 'humour' to be verging on embarrassing. There are laugh out loud films, films that are so bad that you can't help but laugh and then there are diabolical attempts at being funny, such as your drunken uncle trying to get hip with your friends at your 21st birthday party. The Bogus Witch Project doesn't even scrape into the latter category. In true Blair Witch style, much of it is filmed by students on handheld digicams which gives this amateur production an even more amateur and studenty feel. It's reminiscent of something a bunch of drunken and stoned students might have put together over the course of a weekend. But even if these were your friends, you'd struggle to pay compliment to this appalling piece of crap the film's makers seem to have put together.

The Bogus Witch Project has a number of short spoofs of The Blair Witch Project with potentially amusing titles such as The Bel Air Witch Project, The Blair Underwood Project and The Watts Bitch Project. These are interspersed with 'Into the Woods' a series of sketches which, although poor, outshine any of the Blair Witch Project spoofs on the DVD. If you've ever drunkenly pondered making your own spoof horror, then The Bogus Witch Project may well provide you with the inspiration you need to get that old video camera out and crack on with your new project. After all, if this bunch of banal and wearisome Yanks can get paid to create such a diabolical attempt at entertainment, then surely anyone with a video camera an the willingness to make a complete fool of themselves can achieve a modicum of success.

Surely making a mildly amusing spoof horror isn't that difficult. The Scary movie franchise may not be the most intellectually stimulating series of films but there are enough comedic moments to raise the occasional titter. But somehow The Bogus Witch Project fails on every level and is neither interesting, funny or entertaining. It even fails to earn a laugh for being so bad that it's funny, instead sinking to even lower depths. The collection of spoofs also becomes quite tiresome when you quickly realise that the same tired references to the original are being rehashed over and over again. The snotty nose wasn't amusing the first time round, and when you find yourself witnessing it for the fifth time, it is simply wearisome and mind numbingly boring.

Even if you do spot The Bogus Witch Project at a bargain basement price, I urge you not to part with your hard earned cash. You'd be better off paying a pittance to some media students at the local college and asking them to make a spoof horror for your amusement. Chances are, they'll come up with something far better than this. I wouldn't even use the DVD as a coaster as, frankly, I'd be ashamed to have any visitors to discover I had this DVD in my collection. If you're struggling for something to do to keep you amused for 85 minutes then the prospect of watching paint dry would be far more appealing than enduring this torturous excuse of a film.
