The Blues Brothers is a car crash waiting to happen – and when it does it lasts for a bout thirty minutes. To call the Blues Brothers ‘epic’ is probably a bit of an understatement; the film is a small story but told on a large canvas at top volume. Belushi and Ackroyd are on fine deadpan form. Their characters need to raise cash for to help save an orphanage where they grew up. They decide to put on a blues show in order to raise the cash needed to save it. Somehow they get chased by redneck country singers, the police and the Illinois branch of the Nazis. It’s a great silly movie and a must for all fans of Candy, Belushi, Ackroyd and blues music (which is it’s main influence, director Landis has always cited The Blues Brothers as a musical first, comedy second.) The Blues Brothers has some great cameos from Steven Spielberg and James Brown and has some great supporting actors like Carrie Fisher (as Belushi’s murderous ex-spouse.) Memorable scenes include: • a gospel sequence with James Brown • the nun hitting Belushi and Ackroyd with a pointy stick • The Illinois Nazis falling through the sky in their Nazi car (you gotta see it really) The Blues Brothers is available with its sequel, Blues Brothers 2000 made almost 2o years after. It’s OK just to see where the characters ended up really – never as good as this original. You’re bound to watch this one again and again.
