“It’s all in your mind” may be the generic catchphrase of cocky psychologists everywhere, but that really is the case when it comes to the Blair Witch Project. The movie is something of a genre breaker in that you never actually see ‘the Blair Witch’ but it is up to you to imagine it and as such the film is only as scary as your imagination is active. This is largely the reason that the film has received a mixture of praise and criticism from pundits and filmgoers alike. Personally I thought the film was exceptionally good, bladder-leakingly scary and it had me glued fervently to the screen

::Synopsis::
The storyline, as most people will probably know, goes like this. 3 teenage film makers go into the woods near a small town called Burkittsville, Maryland. They go with the intention of making a documentary about the Blair Witch, a legendary woman who lured children of the village into the woods and allegedly killed them. However they lose their map and end up lost in the woods; then the strange things begin happening…

::Storyline::
The storyline of the movie is very strong, ultimately original and very compelling (at least the first time you watch the film). As most Hollywood horror flicks nowadays seem to place a bunch of scantily clad teens in a scary situation with little or no motive, Blair Witch project is a refreshing change as it had both motive and reasoning and lacks the usual cringe-worthy busty blonde teenager running from a masked killer brandishing a large blade of some description.
The film begins with the message “In October of 1994 three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found.” This sets the realistic documentary-esque style that is followed throughout the entire film. It originally had a lot of people believing it was real footage (and to this day there are people who still do), but rest assured it is in fact a cleverly directed and edited fictional piece.
One of the first scenes shows the crew of three teens interviewing people in the village about the Blair witch and acting as a small build up to the events of the actual ‘film’. The interview portion of the film is what I think makes it more believable but it isn’t as good as the rest of the film and is perhaps in place as “padding” to make the film stretch over one hour (in its entirety it is only an hour and 15 mins). As the teens go into the woods everything is going splendidly for a short while until the map goes astray and they find themselves lost and roaming in circles. The tension and panic mounts and then strange things begin happening to the three petrified youths. Stickmen hung from trees, piles of rocks outside their tent, scream of small children in the middle of the night. After one of the party goes missing the other two are left distraught and in a midnight search stumble upon an old ramshackle house where they too meet their untimely demise.

::Characters/Actors::
The actors are the key aspect in this film being so scary. If you watch the director interviews on the DVD they tell you that the actors did actually have to spend a few days in the woods and most of the screaming and crying was improvised, not directed. Whilst the actors, Heather Donahue, Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard are far from household names, they play the part of a distressed group of teenagers lost in the woods to perfection. Whilst Michael Williams and Joshua Leonard have mostly faded from the publics memory, Heather Donahue has gone on to take supporting roles in a couple of other films. These are the typical teen horror flick teens with perfect little jock or cheerleader roles in society, but ordinary everyday people. This works to great effect as it makes it less typical (which builds on the originality) and also makes the characters easier to relate to.

::Soundtrack::
As this film was a lower than low budget film there wasn’t a soundtrack as such, nor was there a score to accompany the film (Unless you want to count Heather Donahue’s petrified screams). Some would say this was a negative thing but it works to great effect as it builds on the illusion that this IS in fact footage found from a group of teens in the woods. It’s a shame the publishers had to go and mess this up in the sequel by having a very busy soundtrack.

::Directing::
The film isn’t ‘directed’ as much as it is churned out in frightening chunks. As you may well know the whole film is shot on two hand-held cameras (a small digi-compact camera and an old-fashioned black and white 8mm DAT camera). This is obvious in the picture quality as it looks more like a home-movie than a blockbuster Hollywood movie and as such gives an instantly more realistic feel to it. The shaky camera work which has been criticised by some as cheap works to great effect in my opinion. Think logically for a moment; you’re in the middle of the dark scary woods that are reputedly haunted by a witch that kills people. You hear a scream behind you and the noise of branches breaking. Is you first concern keeping the camera straight or running the hell away? Exactly. The realistic nature is excellently executed by Sanchez and Myrick, the two newbie directors.

::Extras::
The DVD has a bunch of extras including trailers, a documentary about the Blair Witch Legacy, Extra Footage and Interview with the directors of the movie. Accompanying the movie itself is the website www.blairwitch.com which gives much more information about the legend of the Blair Witch amongst other spooky things.

::My Opinion::
I thought the film was exceptionally well put together and much scarier than today’s generic teen slasher films that plague the box office in their droves nowadays. The Blair Witch project brings the element of fear back to the horror genre and also makes the audience use their imagination for the film to have an effect. This film really does deserve a place in the collection of anyone serious about horror or movies in general. The film is a landmark one and shows that you don’t need a big budget and thousands of gallons of fake blood to spook an audience. The film was quite over-hyped when it first came out with American audiences being shown crying and vomiting after seeing the film – but realistically, if you ignore the hype, you’ll enjoy the film greatly.
Perhaps due to the film’s rather mixed response from audiences you could compare the Blair Witch Project to Marmite. You’ll either love it or hate it.

A great review on this fantastic film. It provokes so many reactions - some people love it, whilst others despise it. I thought that the idea and the way the film pulled it off were brilliant.

The Blair Witch Project (DVD) - review by spacemonkey

Advantages: Truly frightening, psychological rather than obvious. Some good extras, and the inclusion of the documentary is great. Interesting commentary
Disadvantages: Some may find the lack of any real "evidence" of supernatural activity anoying. DVD extras shattered a couple of my illusions!
