I am 14. Underline that several times if you want to. I know very well that I should not legally see this film (certificate is 15 for those living under a rock for the past 8 or 9 years) but it sounded so good, I just couldn't turn it down!
Well, ok, maybe I could.
The hyped up film "The Blair Witch Project" was a budget movie, about 3 kids who go into the woods and get lost. Sounds scary? Perhaps - throw in a few stick figures, some gory stuff in a backpack, and you'd have a pretty terrifying movie if you ask me.
Plot - - -
It all starts when Heather Donahue (referred to as H for rest of op) wants to make a short documentary for her university about the spooky goings-on up at the woods in Burkittsville. She brings along a few mates (Joshua Leonard (J) and Michael Williams (M)), sets up camp, puts a few bangers on the barbie and stupidly loses the car. J and M are not best pleased with H, and squabble about silly things until it's nighttime, and small wooden cross-shapes appear in trees. They are terrified at this point, and lots of running about occurs until the end of the film rests on one question - do they get captured by the mysterious Blair Witch? Or not?
Waste of thinking space completely. Because (perhaps for marketing purposes, I dunno), on the back of the box and at the start of the film, these immortal words are shown -
"In October 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary.
A year later their footage was found"
That's it. So, the ending was given away before you even start watching the tape.
Quick note - - -
The film is not your typical "Hollywood" production. It has no provocative women lying around in slinky red dresses, no muscular men leaping from burning buildings to save wimpy kids. It is, quite simply, a documentary. This means that there is shaky camera work, lots of screaming - basically you are meant to believe you were there. What a load of tripe.
Random fact that may make you like it - - -
I think this film was second highest raker-in at the Box Office for a horror film, so it seems my cynical views are not everyone's cup of tea, lol.
For everyone's information - - -
The film was directed and produced by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, and made by Haxan Films.
It stars Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael Williams (as themselves). These actors were fantastic, and brought the film up to the 2 star rating I'm giving it.
It has a "15" rating, due to amount of swearing, gore and psychological strain.
I bought this at WhSmith, following my friend's opinion of "Ah Rosi maan, such a claaassic" for what works out as £4 (it was part of a deal of 3 for £12). I think you can get it at Amazon for £13.49, but I seriously wouldn't bother.
Why I didn't like it - - -
I found this film to be tedious, quite boring, but not in the least scary as it had promised. You'll point your fingers at me now and call me a snobby cow, but I really didn't feel it was up to the money I'd spent on it. Maybe it would be good for such jollities as Hallowe'en, or maybe Christmas if you're in a particularly festive mood, but for now it will be in my cupboard, behind some Harry Potter books.
Remind me to dust there on October 31st, ok?

I think the UK audience suffered from the media hype over this film after its release in the States. I was in the US when it was released and saw one TV trailer before going to see it. It scared me s**tless. I think the worst part for me was not actually seeing what it was torturing them. I have a very good imagination and ended up scaring myself!
