If I had a pound for every film I had watched and had been immensely disappointed with then, well I would have a lot of pounds… several in fact… ahem…
The Blair Witch Project falls into such a category, where there has been immense hype and no rhyme or reason for this. It starts off pretty good: three students go off into the woods investigating the myth that is the Blair Witch. As amateur filmmakers, they record themselves as they go in search, only to get lost and fall victim to the witch…
We know this is going to happen, it says so on the video, and little else happens, save for a couple of squabbling moments, a few screams here and there, and a bit of ‘funny goings on.’
That is your plot, my friends.
As for its originality, well that it where is does impress. Directed skilfully by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, it is in the guise of a documentary told by the students during their time spent in the woods. Their footage is found afterwards when they have gone ‘missing.’ So it was nice to see a fresh look on horror, using modern technology.
I suppose ‘cult’ is what we would describe this 1999 film as. There will be people out there coughing up there cocoa, ‘Borg! But did you not like the overall imagery to this masterpiece?’ Sadly, no I did not. Okay, it was well made and original, but it was – underlying – the rudiments of a story that has been done before and much better.
It stars little known trio Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C Williams as ‘themselves.’ The actors were good, the three youngsters working well together, and in parts I did think, ‘Hey did this really happen?’ But some good parts don’t make up to being a great movie.
I am a fan of horror, so anything that is horror orientated and has been touted as ‘good’ makes me want to go out and see it. I saw it, I was not impressed. I am glad I watched it, just to see it for myself, but I am not too itching to see it again.
