The Blair Witch Project is very different to main stream Hollywood productions. It is presented as an incomplete student film, as it has not been polished up as a Hollywood movie. It has been filmed and presented as an unedited documentary, with hazy and blurred camera work. The only editing that it does have is the edits between the two different cameras, this is very jumpy and often one scene or shot does not follow on from the previous. These points do not make this film bad, but actually contributes to the chilling story that unfolds.
The only lighting that the film has, in a production sense, is the light that is attached to the hand held camera. All other lighting is purely natural, well actually the ONLY other lighting is the sunlight in the day.
The supernatural thrillers’ plot is this: Three student filmmakers set out to film a documentary, to discover the truth behind the Burkittsville Blair Witch. The legend of the Blair Witch stretches back to the 1940’s in Maryland U.S.A. where a large number of children went missing from the town of Burkittsville. The story says that the children were taken into the woods where the witched lived. In her house she took them down into her basement in two’s where she killed them.
That’s pretty scary stuff on its own, with out three students trying to find her!!
Here’s another chilling fact; the names of the characters are the actual names of the actors.
This movie because of it’s “what’s real” content, is very similar to Orson Wells’ 1983 radio broadcast of ‘The War of The Worlds’, in which ordinary dramatic narrative was used to break into a scheduled broadcast with a series of increasingly disturbing ‘news broadcasts’. This is one of the reasons why it was so big on release. It was available and publicised on the Internet (before the film distribution company had even heard of it) as a real story. Amazing stuff!!
In conclusion The Blair Witch Project, because of its amateurish appearance and low production values, puts you right where the directors (Daniel Myrick and Edward Sanchez) wants you; right on the edge of your seat. This film is purely experimental in the eyes of the Hollywood production and distribution companies; this was a one off ‘Independent movie pick up’ for these companies. I don’t think they will take such a gamble again, even though this was a hit.
And for these reasons you will never see a movie like this again from Hollywood.
We, as an audience, are lucky this film was picked up. So get out and buy it!!
It’s one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.
