As probably just about everyone on the planet knows, this film was one of the most hyped movies ever. The story goes that it is real video footage shot by 3 film students who went missing in 1994, and their footage was found a year later and made into this film. Amazingly, a lot of Americans believed this, and believed it really was a true story - thanks to a website which detailed the Legend of the Blair Witch. In many ways this seems laughable - if three students had gone missing, presumed dead, then would their families really have allowed their video footage to be made into a film?! I don't think so!!! Still, if people are gullible enough to believe it then whoever thought of it had quite a good idea really!

By the time the film reached the UK, we all knew it wasn't really true. However, the hype continued, with it being heralded as the scariest film ever, and TV features showing people coming out of the cinema throwing up and in tears. Again, what they neglected to tell us was that the main cause of the sickness was the fact that the film is mainly shot with handheld cameras, and the footage is very shaky - causing a motion sickness effect when watched on a big screen. One of my friends can testify to this because she saw it at the cinema and had to close her eyes through most of it because it made her feel nauseous. In any case I found the scariest film ever tag hard to believe, when the film is only a 15 certificate - nevertheless I was intrigued!

Anyway, despite all that hype, I managed to resist watching the film until now - mainly because of its length (around an hour and 15 minutes!) I refused on principle to pay money to watch such a short film, so waited until it came onto the non pay-per-view Sky Channels before watching it!

So, on to the film itself - and for those who haven't yet seen it, I am going to give away the plot here so you may wish to stop reading. Having said that, I knew most of the plot before I watched it and it didn't really spoil it for me - in any case, I was still intrigued by the hype so I watched it anyway, and maybe you will too!

There are no big name actors in the film at all - presumably to add to the feeling that it could be a true story! No one would have been taken in at all if the lead roles had been played by big Hollywood stars!

As previously mentioned, the film is made up from footage taken by three film students (Heather - the Director, Mike and Josh), who set out to make a film about the Legend of the Blair Witch. This centres on a small town in America called Blair, where many years ago there were a high number of disappearances of children. The film starts off in a graveyard, showing the grave stones of all the children who died during that time. The students interview a number of local people who all give variations of the same story: a witch lived in the woods and used to take children away and kill them. Some people think it is rubbish, or merely a legend, others believe it to be true. Incidentally, it is important to pay attention during this part of the film, as what one of the interviewees says adds to the chillingness of the ending of the film. He tells the story that the Blair Witch used to kidnap children two at a time and take them to a house in the woods. The witch would then kill the children, but would make one child stand in the corner with its back turned while the Witch killed the other child: it couldn't bear the other child's eyes on it while it was killing.

Once the scene has been set with the interviews, the students set off into the woods, backpacking and camping out overnight. Soon, however, (and perhaps rather predictably) they become lost in the woods and the relationship between the three of them becomes strained: the two boys, Josh in particular, blame Heather, first of all for getting them lost and ultimately for taking them there in the first place. They become intent on finding their way out, but Josh throws the map in the river, believing it to be useless, so they only have a compass to find their way back to their car. Along their way in the woods, they also find some strange signs in the woods: piles of stones, and sticks arranged in crosses and bundles. First of all they find this fascinating, but soon they become scared by it, especially when they hear noises outside their tent at night - and finally, when bundles of sticks and piles of stones appear outside their tent overnight, they become really terrified.

With all the strange happenings, and the breakdown of the relationship between the three students, Josh eventually goes off on his own, and Heather and Mike are left alone together. They set off to find Josh - they can hear him shouting, but don't know where he is. Their search eventually takes them to a deserted house - they go in, and we see children's hand prints and strange writing on the walls. Finally we hear screaming, Heather drops her camera, and the last thing we see is an image of Mike standing in the corner with his back turned.

So, that's the story for you - and now my verdict on the film. Well, first of all I would say that it was definitely not worth the hype, but that's not to say it was a bad film. The idea behind it is great - the basis being that horror lies in the imagination. We don't actually see anything scary throughout the film (a few sticks and stones are not scary in themselves!), neither do we see the Witch at the end, however, we see the students' terror at the unknown, and also form our own opinions about who or what is behind it all. For those Harry Potter fans amongst you, it actually made me think of the Boggart - the creature which takes on the appearance of whatever scares its victim most - and for me this is very much the same. The Blair Witch can be whoever or whatever you want it to be - and this in many ways makes it a lot more chilling than if it was simply a slasher, a bogeyman or a monster! If however you don't have a vivid imagination it's perhaps not the film for you!

As for the way the film is made - well, this did actually detract from it a bit for me. As I said before there is no way it would actually have been made into a film if it was real footage, and also there are many times during the film where you think "why on earth would they be filming this!?" If you are running away, terrified for your life, I don't think you would think of putting the camera on first! Having said that, taken on face value the footage does seem realistic and does have a home movie feel to it. The actors seem natural on the film as well - I did read somewhere that much of it was ad libbed so this is perhaps why.

Another thing which spoiled it for me is the constant arguing, screaming and shouting which goes on throughout most of the middle section of the film, a good 45 minutes or so (after they have got lost but before they find the house). This part went on far too long for my liking, and is very samey (which I have to admit has made it slightly difficult for me to remember in what order the getting lost, losing the map, sticks and stones appearing etc. took place, so I apologise if my summary of the story is not exactly right, chronologically speaking!) Heather's voice really started to grate on me after not very long at all!

So, to sum it all up, it's not a bad film - the idea behind it is great (so I am looking forward to Blair Witch 2!), but the home movie feel really is quite pointless. The beginning and end are good, but the middle left a lot to be desired! Definitely worth a look, so long as you are prepared to use your imagination, but not worth all the hype, and if you are expecting blood and gore you will be disappointed!

Parts of this were chilling and it was good that what was scary was left to you imagination and not rammed down your throat. However, as you say, the home video approach was really quite annoying and the concept so flawed because there is no way that anybody would have kept the camera running through all of this. Overall, an interesting film but highly overrated. Great op.

I was enlightened by your very lengthy summary of "the plot",since I was unable to establish one for myself, I would say that I was disapointed by this film, however that would be an understatement. I expected it was going to be a no hoper anyway.

I thought this film was pants, the camera was all over the place and i felt almost nauseous at one stage. If you aren`t cockeyed before watching it you will certainly be afterwards. The constant screaming got on my nerves and so did the acting.Cant believe the actors got paid for that.I wouldn`t watch it again.
