A bit about me - I love the cinema. From the latest blockbuster (dragged along by my 15 year old son), to my preferred arthouse films, I just enjoy the experience.
Update (May 2005) - my son is 19 and at Uni now! How time flies...

I was disappointed with “The Blair witch project”, having expected to see a psychological thriller and a tale of unspeakable horror. I found it very like “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, although obviously less literal when it comes to the full truth of the reasons for the horrors – you don’t get to see shots of any madman in “The Blair witch project”. But it’s a similar story – young kids wandering around, getting lost (a staple of many a Hammer horror film, and even the “Rocky Horror Picture show”). I suppose that essentially “The Blair Witch Project” lies somewhere between a psychological thriller and a horror film, and I think it works best as the former. You get a very real impression of the fear and the terror of the characters’ fear.
But there were too many times in the film when I found myself switching off, I really found it quite tedious in parts. This was, I am sure, partly down to the fact that I could feel nothing at all for the three central characters. All their arguing and pathetic crying over little things didn’t endear them at all to me, so I found I couldn’t care less whether they came to a sticky end or not.
The footage, from a hand-held videocamera, supposedly shot periodically by the characters in the film, is suitably bad quality, both pictures and sound, and a lot of the time you just get pictures of the ground, or even complete blackness. Fair enough, it all sets the scene excellently, but it’s pretty boring.
I never covered my face with the cushion (yes, I saw the film at home, not in the cinema!), as is usual when I watch this kind of film, and it didn’t scare me. Within it’s limits, the actors were fine, but I think the direction leaves a lot to be desired. Although, if you believed the story about it all being a true record of what happened to three young film makers (which maybe some people did, when it was first released, or shall I say hyped), I can appreciate that could be pretty scary. I’d put off going to see the film at the cinema, as I’d heard it was very disturbing, and was worried I’d find it too scary.
But I needn’t have worried - the film was most definitely an anticlimax.

I've got to be honest, I absolutely loved the film and can away feeling quite unnerver. Nevertheless, I can understand why people would be disappointed. If you want a really good scare watch Event Horizon with the lights off late at night!

I think the hype wrecked it as a movie.
We all knew far too much about it and therefore expected way more than it could deliver. My friend, an American saw it having never heard of it and thought it was great, as she had no ideas what to expect.
