Disney's Young Black Stallion tells the story of a wild colt who befriends a young girl in the Arabian desert eventually becoming her equine soul mate and champion racehorse. Set in 1946 North Africa the story begins as Neera gets separated from her desert caravan by an ambush of soldiers. Alone and lost she discovers a colt among the drifts and in time they forge a friendship of interdependence. The spirited horse and child ride like the wind yet when they arrive home the colt bolts leaving Neera to convince her grandfather that the legendary stallion is more than a mirage. Ultimately she proves this in a climatic action sequence brimming with girl power. The cinematography dazzles with its large-format visuals and sweeping panoramas yet the 50-minute length truncates the story into a seemingly abridged version. An extra hour of plot and character development would have allowed it to venture closer to the magnificence of the original Stallion installment.

I saw Pitch Black in a movie preview in May 2000 which was a few weeks before cinematic release. For some reason it was then out back a few months so I was happy I got into the preview.
Due to the film being released in the USA way before it hit the UK anyone with a multi-region player had the opportunity to get it on dvd before UK cinemas and with the R2 release not far away this R1 release is still a better bet.
For those who know nothing about the film I'll recap. A passenger spacecraft crash lands on an unknown planet. On board are various kinds of people and also a dangerous prisoner named Riddick. Naturally when they crash some are killed, others survive and the prisoner has escaped. This prisoner comes in the shape of one Vin Diesel who is a known ruthless criminal who has some problems with the rest of humanity ...
Advantages: action packed, not overly long Disadvantages: none
At the age of 12, I was keenly horse mad and also loved adventure stories, whether they be kids solving mysteries, or Cherry Ames going on some exotic nursing assignment, or an outing in the Star Wars universe. Imagine my great excitement when I discovered this lovely little book sitting at my place at the table one afternoon, after my parents returned from a shopping trip one day while I was at school. The BlackStallion is more than a story about a boy and his horse. It's fraught with danger, excitement , and peril, making for a rollicking good read for any young person. Young Alec Ramsay is about to board a ship to return to his home after a trip to India, and while waiting to board is enthralled by the sight of a sheik's horse being loaded into the hold. It is a large, angry stallion, as black as midnight, and it stamps and rears ...
Advantages: Excellent Film Disadvantages: Not many
Recently there was an article which really sparked my emotions, both sadness and anger, surprisingly it was in The Sun (the most professional and reliable of the daily papers) the article was on the sate of Somalia and the history of the wars going on in the country.
Quoted in the article was a film called Black Hawk Down, which I had heard of but never, had the opportunity to watch and had no clue about, later on when in discussion on the article, somebody brought the film up and highly recommended it.
Buying the Film
I bought the film in Blockbuster when I was returning a rental; it cost £4 which I thought was highly reasonable for a DVD, especially one which was recommended and according to the front of the DVD won two Oscars, and looked to carry an exciting cast set.

DVD Description
Acclaimed cinematographer Carroll Ballard steps into the director's chair with THE BLACK STALLION, a visually stunning adaptation of Walter Farley's classic novel about the adventures of a young boy and his love for a black, Arabian stallion. When Alec (Kelly Reno) washes upon the shore of a deserted island after a terrible shipwreck, he soon discovers that he isn't the only survivor. A wild Arabian stallion managed to reach the island as well, giving Alec a new reason to live. Gradually, Alec wins the stallion's trust, instigating a relationship that will change both of them forever. When Alec is finally discovered, he convinces his mother to let the stallion live in the backyard, and after meeting Henry Dailey (Mickey Rooney), a thrilling final chapter is introduced, one in which Alec and the stallion begin to train for a racing championship, making their bond even stronger. Ballard's film, tautly edited by Robert Dalva and lushly photographed by Caleb Deschanel, has become one of the pinnacle achievements of family entertainment. Intelligent, simplistic, moving, and inspiring, it is a brilliant example of cinema's ability to be effective without relying on dialogue to tell the story. Featuring a standout performance by Rooney as the horse trainer.
