Elmore Leonard has written dozens of books and screenplays, starting as long ago as the 1950's scripting westerns. Since then a lot of his work has been brought to the screen with varying results from Get Shorty and Out of Sight right down to recent Be Cool.
Owen Wilson plays a pretty criminal fired from his construction job in Hawaii for assaulting his boss. Taken under the wing of the local judge played by Morgan Freeman he is then involved in a scheme devised by a temptress Sara Foster to steal a considerable sum of money from his previous employer who keeps it for nefarious means.
Like most films in this genre there are considerable crosses and double crosses and part of the charm is trying to work out who is scamming who. Everyone does a competent job though Foster is no actress and seems to have been cast for a willingness to undress and her obvious eye candy.
Whilst this is by no means a landmark in this particular field there are far worse examples and im suprised by some of the extremely negative comments the film attracted. Given the quality of cast and crew, director Armitage previously helmed the sublime Grosse Point Blanke a lot more should have been expected but the film isn't that bad, just midly entertaining.
