When Bruce Lee died in 1973, Hong Kong film moguls were desperate for someone or something ... more
to fill the massive martial arts movie gap, which Westerners were demanding. The solution was, to use Bruce Lee look-a-likes, and have the same titles that had been box office smash hits for Bruce Lee.This movie is a perfect example, using Dragon Lee who is more of a look-a-like for Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story) than Bruce Lee, and the title Big Boss 2, but has nothing in common with the original Big Boss.Having said this, it is a great action movie on it's own, this Kung fu thriller is set in the time when the Chinese were being oppressed by the Japanese, and the main threat is from a big Japanese gang boss (Bolo Yeung), who is trying to stop and kill any Chinese renegades and their secret society.Messages have to be sent between groups, and Lee Han San (Dragon Lee), the son of Lee Wan Jan, is a trusted messenger as his father was a leader of the cause. When trying to deliver a message, he is shot by the Japanese big boss, but luckily escapes and is found and saved by his father's old friend, Jo Chu Chee. Here Jo, his wife and his daughter, Wan Ner, help Lee Han San to a full recovery.Whilst Lee is convalescing, the big boss sets his men the task to track him down and kill all who have anything to do with the renegades, including Lee and Jo. The battle begins for Lee to stay alive and keep his father's legacy alive. But at what cost.

Being formidable fighters, they soon rise up in the echelons of Shanghai's underworld controlled by The Daddy - Chen Sing. The Big Boss then pits friend against friend in the bloody finale. A true classic in every sense, violence, technique, story line and great choreography from the team that brought you Iron Monkey.

There wasn't that much fighting for something I was expecting to be mainly a martial arts film, but having said that, the plot was stronger than I expected and actually worked quite well.
The action is largely predictable but still engaging. It's not that spectacular for the most part, but there's some much better stuff towards the end (mainly from Lee of course).
Bruce Lee hardly appears at all for the first half of the film (although this does contribute to his character a little) and the majority of the fighting is reserved for the latter half.
There's some pretty catchy music (apart from a couple of short awful bits) between the music that really add to the film. The sound effects are (rather typically) over the top - they really don't need to be but I guess that was just the style back then, so to be expected.
The dubbing is a little amusing in places, though generally good enough (I've seen much worse). You have to laugh at a few other little things too (I'm sure if you're supposed to be laughing at them or not! e.g. Lee kicking a guy through a wooden house, leaving a perfect man-shaped hole in the wall).
Some camera work is quite good and adds to the atmosphere, but some of it is rather poor (and not that great in some of the fight scenes with many people).
** CONCLUSION **
This was a pleasing film with a plot strong enough to make up for the lesser degree of action and a catchy musical score.
Advantages: Great Fight Scenes Disadvantages: Poor Dubbing, Dated Story
...a drug-trafficking ring. The story is dated now, as are the effects, but Lee's performance is breathtaking. You get a much better aspect to how talented this man was by his earlier films and although this was clearly not his best film, he is clearly at his best in it. When I saw this for the first time years ago I was surprised at just how much violence was in it, I mean take into account that this film was made in the 70's, so the violence is credible ... ...Lee as always, in particular the last one with the main 'baddie'. Also the believable ones where he's fighting 2-3 guys at a time, his quick, short, sharp shots are always impressive to watch.
If you buy this with the pretence of great effects like the Matrix or a stunning story like Fight Club, then you will be sorely disappointed, but if you buy it on the basis of watching a Master of Martial Arts on top of his game, then you will love it. With ...

Advantages: Superb fighting Disadvantages: corny music
The Big Boss is a gret marshal arts film in its own right. It is in Bruce Lee's native language, with english subtitles. The story follows Bruce as he follows his Uncle. They go to his cousins family so Bruce can find work. Bruce gets on very well, and gets a job with his family at the local ice factry. Bruce's eldest cousin is an all round good guy, who fights bullies and does not gamble. Bruce has been given a pendant by his mother to stop him ... ...see Bruce fight. Two of the family go missing, so Bruces fighting cousin and another brother head off to the bosses house to find out where they went. They do not return. No one knows why, but when a fight starts at Bruces work and someone breaks his mothers pendant you know there will be hell to pay.
The rest of the film is full with superb fight scenes, but I will not let the plot slip for those who haven't seen it. This is Bruce at his best, ...

The Big Boss Bruce Lee's fist and probably his best film ever. The ultimate in martial combat. Kung Fu films do not get any better than this. This film probably inspired Game of Death 2, as they are similar as far as the plot is concerned. ...this earlier film of his. The story mainly about this guy who gets work in this factory and sooner than later he finds out that the boss of the factory not only exploits the workers but also in to drugs and kills the workers who know about his naughty business.
The story line might be a bit out dated now, but hey even in the millenium with all this special effects with bullet time and Johns woo slow motion action scenes, Bruce Fighting is unique ... ...well ok some but all the kinks and all the round house are his round house not camera making him do them ( take a not keano). You can't be touch by how bruce Lee screams are pretty tramatic and the faces and squeeling he does actrually they pretty funny, anyway how this movie show you Bruce lee in his best and it's not a bad film in all, Just I personnaly like my matrix with the special effects and all, I'm more of a millenium man you see.

Advantages: Bruce Lee's charismatic and technically perfect fighting techniques. Disadvantages: One of the weaker of Bruces' films???
The first Bruce Lee film, some say the best, but I disagree. For a 1970's Hong Kong film, it boasts a strong plotline, but this may still leave western audiences wanting more when compared to modern day features. The film has had many edits and cuts over the years, the most famous being the 'saw in the head' scene; one of the frequent gore scenes to which Hong Kong audiences were accustomed, but were too shocking to be included in home releases, ...
