A dive into a mixed see of cultures, experiences, and cultures... you have frenchs, italians, americans... and a lot more... reaching deeper without oxygen is the purpose. But mainly to tell the world the story of Jacques Mayol (the main charachter wich is also technical consultant for the movie). and his discovery of life outside the water... Great performace of Jean Réno one of the most used actors of Luc Besson.
The story starts with two kids Jacques Mayol and Enzo Molinari, a french skinny guy and an strong fat italian, but two very good divers, they don't hate each other but they stick with different actitudes, Jacques wants to help the others, while Enzo will do everything for money and to be one of the best! Then one day while Jacques wents to help is father and is uncle with the fishing is father as an accident and dies... there with Jacques screaming on the boat, the camera moves trough the water surface and movie goes from Black & White to Colours and it goes to the adult life of Jacques and Enzo. Enzo is in Italy and his hired to rescue a diver from a shipwreck and after the rescue his brother Roberto asks him what to do with the money: he says that he will buy a dress to her sister, a new suite to him (Roberto) and have a car paint (an very old Fiat 600)... Roberto says that with that money they could even buy a new car but he says to Roberto "...but most important, find me the French men, Find me Jacques Mayol!" Enzo his the world apnea champeon, and he knows that his title will worth nothing if he doesn't beat Jacques Mayol. Jacques his in Peru diving in ice cold water so scientists can measure his heart bits, his heart bits sound like they are not human and Dr Lawrence says that he looks like a dolphin. While he gets out of the water, he gets to know Joana a girl who works for an american insurance company wich is there to get some documents of a lost vehicle... Jacques Mayol returns to his home in Europe and when he is swimming in his swimming pool, he notices a coin in the bottom, he gets it,looks up and when he gets out of the water he sees Enzo that talks to him and says that he is the world champion of Apnea and there will be a world competition in two weeks in Taormina, he gives him plane tickets and leaves. Two weeks after they meet in Taormina, and Joana manages to find Jacques Mayol, and she also goes there because she fills something for him... in Taormina Jacques finds that love is far more than dive with dolphins, womens can also show him the feel of life. "The big blue" stands for the light that looses it self into the deepth when you're diving...
Oh by the way i still haven't tasted yet "Spaghetti del mare"...
There are two versions of the movie,a short one with about 120 minutes and a long one with more or less 170 minutes. I strongly recommend the short version of the story and if you don't understand the end of the movie, well... (no i won't tell it to you!!) you can see the longer one. Some DVD versions, only have the longer version, and that's bad because I thing everybody should see the short one for start.
The soundtrack of Eric Serra it's a MUST, anytime I miss the sea... I put it on my CD player, close my eyes and relax... There are two versions of the Soundtrack with 1 or 2 CD's, fortunately I've managed to buy outside of Portugal the 2 CD's BOX, with the entire soundtracks...
This is one of "my life" movies. Anytime I feel like going to the sea or the river to do some kayaking or just enjoy the sea, and i can't, i watch the movie....
