Astounding
Review of Matrix, The (1999) by  JeffSumm

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

...There are some films you can see on video and still get the full impact. Some films you really need to see on the big screen. The Matrix is one of those and beyond-- the video/DVD shows the making of the movie with all the camera tricks, and even that is a must see. It's the story about a man who is shown reality-- the reality that nearly every human alive is plugged into a computer-controlled life simulation and all their bodies are really just harnessed for energy. Listen for the occasional references, such as when Neo, the main character, is called a 'coppertop' near the beginning. The effects are stunning and the whole idea is ingenious.... Read review

Blood guts and respect
Review of Beyond The Mat DVD by  minxette

Advantages: Powerful use of the medium
Disadvantages: Not for the weak stomached

...I'm relatively new to wrestling as I only started to watch WWF 2 years ago, and I too thought that wrestling was fake. I thought the blood came from capsules or a cleverly placed ketchup bottle. I also thought that the wrestlers 'pretended' to be injured and it was all illusion. How wrong could I be? "Beyond The Mat" is a very sane, very measured documentary about the world behind the glitz. It follows Jake the Snake Roberts through his traumatic reunion with his daughter and his addiction to crack cocaine, and shows how he was headlining WWF main events one minute then wrestling exhibtion matches in barns the next. It also follows Terry Funk who insists on wrestling even though falling wrong could end his ability to walk such is the punishment he has taken in the ring. Most enlightening to me was the Mick Foley segment, I am a big fan... Read review

DVD Description

A young woman from New York named Liza (Katherine MacColl) inherits a Louisiana motel that has been unoccupied for nearly 60 years. While restoring the old building, many of the workers meet mysterious and untimely deaths, each more ill-fated than the next. Furthermore, Liza is visited by a blind specter named Emily (Sarah Keller) who lectures from a 4,000-year-old book of collected prophecies that explains the motel is situated above one of seven portals to hell. As her sanity dwindles, Liza finds some much-needed stability in a local doctor named John McCabe (David Warbeck), who is determined to find a rational explanation for the recent state of affairs. Nevertheless, the protagonists are led through a maze of bizarre confrontations with beings beyond the realm of the living, and into an apocalyptic world of unknown horrors.
THE BEYOND is at once the quintessential Lucio Fulci film and a staple in the overall Italian horror genre. The director's epic masterpiece is a blend of atmospheric surrealism and nightmarish visions (a grisly tarantula attack, flesh-melting acid spills, a softball-sized gun blast through the skull of a young zombified girl, and an eyeball impaling or two) that are definitely unsuitable for those with weak stomachs.

Speed, what Speed.
Review of Speed 2 - Cruise Control (Wide Screen) by  tavmat

Advantages: Sorry, but I can't think of any.
Disadvantages: Speed 1 but on water, Jason Patric, The film it self!

...The original 'Speed' was quite an entertaining film. It had fast action, explosions, talent (Dennis Hooper, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock) and A PLOT! Speed 2: Cruise Control has only ONE of these things...Sandra Bullock! Speed 2 has about as much action as a celibate priest on a Sunday morning. (Can I say that?) The acting is beyond awful, the script is beyond painful and the special effects are none existant. The DVD for Speed 2 contains: Original Theatrical Trailer Interactive Menus Scene Access which is another good reason to not to buy this trash. If you have to mention "interactive menus" as a 'special feature' then the dvd is worse than I thought. If your idea of fun is smacking your head into a nail-bed then this is your kind of film. If on the otherhand you are sane, then rent out "Willo the Wisp" its much more entertainging.... Read review

Beyond The Mat
Review of Beyond The Mat DVD by  stephenjwz

Advantages: Insightful, Interesting take on the Wrestling Business
Disadvantages: Dated

...I bought Beyond the Mat because I am a wrestling fan, and was intrigued by the promise of behind the scenes footage and exploration of the business as a whole by an unbiased group (WWFE video's are obviously skewed towards the product, mainstream media seems to take potshots at sports entertainment for no reason). Beyond the mat impressed me greatly in that it was well made, featured interesting footage, but remained truthfull to the viewer from the begining. As a fan of the recent wrestling boom (1998-) and only a casual observer of wrestling during the Hogan era (1988-1998), i was not particularly shocked or impressed by what was "revealed" by beyond the mat; this film is not made as a cheap expose, or an insult to the "sport", a la 'Secrets of pro wrestling revealed', which was both poorly conceived and created. It focuses on 3 main... Read review
