Railway, through the very heart of the National Park, is one of Britain's finest railway experiences, along a line, which for more than 150 years has stood tribute to the engineering skills of George Stephenson. This programme takes you first to the coastal town of Whitby, with its cliff top Abbey, fine beaches and bustling harbour, then on to Grosmont station. War department tender locomotive Dame Vera Lynn and No. 80135 are captured in action, before joining Lambton Tank No.5 as she travels the steep climb to Goathland, then past the radar golf balls of Flyingdales to descend into the Newtondale Gorge.Disc Two - The Severn Valley RailwayFor 16 miles, the Severn Valley Railway follows Britain's longest river, linking gentle countryside and historic towns, which are steeped in the relics of our industrial past. From the new Victorian style station at Kidderminster the programme journeys north, using the line's steam locomotives, including the Great Marquess, a K4 class loco. Along the way the visitor can see traditional crafts, such as carpet, rope and clay pipe making. There are also superb stations and viaducts, as well as the ferry at Hampton Loade, a waterwheel at Daniels Mill and the picturesque River Severn itself. At journey's end in the ancient town of Bridgenorth, there's a chance to see the Midland motor museum, before the world famous heritage site at Ironbridge.Disc Three - The Keighley And Worth Valley RailwayIn the heart of West Yorkshire, the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway possesses an impressive catalogue of steam locomotives. During the year the railway holds a variety of special events. This programme follows the events that took place during Enthusiasts Weekend in spring. It also provides a fascinating insight into the operation of a preserved railway and features the inaugural running of the last fully restored 'Jinty' No.47279.Disc Four - The Bluebell RailwayThe Bluebell Railway was Britain's first standard gauge, passenger carrying, preserved railway. After 35 years, this outstanding line, set deep in the Mid-Sussex countryside is still at the forefront of the steam preservation movement. Beautifully restored stations are complemented by an unrivalled collection of steam locomotives, coaches and wagons. Many of these are seen in action up and down the line, while one of the world's most glamorous and luxurious trains is recreated in the Golden Arrow Pullman.Disc Five - The Paignton and Dartmouth RailwayThe Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway is the classic holiday line, with steam trains running for seven miles along the spectacular Torbay coast; a typical West Country Branch Line which revives all the atmosphere of the Great Western Railway. From Brainless terminus at Kingswear 'Lydham Manor' climbs from the banks of the River Dart through deeply wooded hillside to Churston, followed by a descent of the Torbay coast. There are magnificent views over the Dart Estuary and superb seascapes right across Lyme Bay to Portland Bill. There is also time to visit the olde world town of Dartmouth and other attractions along the line.Disc Six - The West Somerset RailwayWith 22 miles of track, the West Somerset Railway is the longest in British preservation. From Minehead Bay, this line winds up between the Brendon and Quantock Hills, serving each of the ten beautifully restored stations, capturing their own unique character. The programme explores the many attractions, which are found along the way, including the Exmoor National Park, local villages, Dunster Castle, Cleeve Abbey, Coombe Sydenham Country Park; animal centres and cruises by motor-ship. With the Mayday steam gala, and the August Steam Fayre there is also plenty of action up and down the line.

variety of steam interest. In Middleton, near the centre of Leeds, one of the world's oldest railways has been resurrected, while the Bowes Railway still works its early rope hauled inclines. In the Lake District, narrow gauge steam conveys tourists through the beautiful scenery of Ravenglass and Eskdale, but equally delightful are the standard gauge railways over the North Yorkshire Moors, and in the high valley of South Tyneside.

expanding, as is the nearby Kent and East Sussex, and the Great Central Railway (which has now adopted main line running). The Severn Valley Railway promotes itself as Britain's premiere steam railway, while Paignton and Dartmouth is 'the holiday line'. All demonstrate the enormous enthusiasm generated by the steam locomotive.

to the Welsh coast led the way for the British Railway Preservation Movement. Today these lines provide for railway enthusiasts and tourists alike, and this programme features the activities of the Ffestiniog Railway, Welsh Highland Railway, Bala Lake, Llanberis Lake, Corris, and the father of them all, the Talyllyn Railway. Railways at Fairbourne and on the slopes of Snowdon (Wales' highest mountain) were built to cater for visitors, as was the Conway Valley Railway Museum and the Great Orme Tramway, at Llandudno. But standard gauge locomotives were also busy, on the Llangollen Railway and on the Cambrian main line along the North Wales coast. The programme ends in Aberystwyth, with the Electric Cliff Railway, and the Vale of Rheidol, the last steam to be operated by British Rail.

This is another in the eminently professionally produced DVD programmes on steam train released through Green Umbrella.
With the Very Best of BritishSteam of Yesteryear, you are given a real feast for the eyes and also, for the memory, of course. Well, for those of us old enough to remember when steam trains regularly plied their business up and down the main lines of the United Kingdom.
The last regular steam runs in Britain came to a very sad halt in August 1968. That's slightly under a year before the first manned space flight to the moon, for those interested in transport trivia.
Without an unsung bunch of dedicated enthusiasts and professional and semi-professional film makers in the previous two decades, these wonderful steam trains would not be available to the general public. They would only exist as the personal ...

I have seen this film many years ago now but never really followed what was going on as it did not appeal to me. For some reason hubby decided that he wanted to re watch it so out came the DVD and I was expecting another night of boredom but I can say that after sitting and watching it properly I did actually manage to follow the story and did quite enjoy it.

Fred Dibnah's Age of SteamDVD is another exceptionally good TV programme released on DVD that carefully reflects and capture's Fred Dibnah's love of steam and his respect for the engineers who made steam not only a possibility but a living and breathing reality before, during and beyond the Victorian era.
As anyone who knows of Fred Dibnah will be able to testify, Fred Dibnah has had a special fascination for all things steam since his childhood growing up in the Northern industrial town of Bolton, Lancashire. In Bolton if cotton was King, the steam must assuredly have been his Queen or consort.
Fred's respect was made manifest by the fact that he carefully and expertly restored steam engines not only for himself (his Aveling and Porter traction engine for one) but also for friends and later for commercial clients.
Although ...
