Advantages: Great music, often hilarious
Disadvantages: Not much story

...throughout. The "Collector's Series" edition from Buena Vista Home Entertainment includes a promotional special on the first disc in addition to the film. Then there is a whole second disc of bonus features, including interviews with the filmmakers, the cast, the production crew, and so on. Not a single interview with a single Beatle, though, which is a disappointment. The film is in widescreen (16:9 ratio), and you can view it in English or French. DVD-Rom features include a film scrapbook, a screenplay viewer, a website archive and more. These are some nice features, but I would have liked to see some interviews with the remaining Beatles. But the set is worth buying just to see this classic film.... Read review

Advantages: Musical Collector's must-have
Disadvantages: can't think of any

...There have been many attempts to modernise the story of Romeo and Juliet on film; some memorable, some you wish weren't so. West Side Story probably still tops the lot for originality and its ability to stand alone in its own right as a dramatic musical. It was nominated for 11 Oscars and won 10. Although I was only five years old when it hit the cinemas, the film and its songs are etched on my psyche in the same way as many Beatles songs are. I'm sure this is true for many of my generation. I need to watch it at least once a year and this collectors' edition DVD is fit for purpose. The plot of the film is unmistakeably based on the Shakespeare play but does not attempt to slavishly imitate in the woefully inadequate way that the film starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Claire Danes did a few years back.
