The Bear is one of my husbands favourite films and he has been trying to get it on DVD for a very long time so I decided I would treat him for when he returned home from Afghan. The only trouble with getting it for him is that he wanted me to watch it with him!
THE FILM
The film is set in the mountains of British Columbia in 1885.
The film is based on a bear cub who looses his mother when a big rock falls on her. He is left all alone struggling to survive. He comes across a giant male bear but the bear wants nothing to do with the cub as the male bears do not rear the cubs.
The male bear gets shot by hunters who are out in the forest looking for a kill. The wounded bear goes off and tries to heal his wound. The brave bear cub goes over to him and helps him by licking his wound. The male bear befriends the cub and decides that he will watch out and protect him from the hunters.
The hunters are angry that the bear was not killed when they shot him and they make a point of trying to track the bear down and finish the job.
Will the hunters finally make the kill and will the male bear be able to protect the cub from the hunters?
MY OPINION
This really is not my type of film but I did promise my husband that I would watch it and not fall to sleep.
The story is quite good but really the only thing which kept me interested in the film is the scenery. There are some amazing views shown of the mountains in British Columbia.
There is not much talking in the film as at the beginning of the film there are only 2 actors involved but towards the end they are joined by another hunter, making 3 so the majority of the film is just scenes of the 2 bears. The music which accompanies the film help to tell the story and all the songs were very appropriate for what they were trying to make us feel.
I did find the scenes where the bear cub had dreams very off putting and I did feel that they spoilt the film and the part where the cub eats magic mushrooms is very farfetched and to me just did not seem appropriate.
The 3 actors who played the hunters were all very good at portraying their characters and making me believe in them.
The two bears which were used for the filming, Youk, the cub and Bart, the old grizzly bear were outstanding and I must admit that the way the trainers got them to work together and to show their feelings for each other was amazing.
The film ends with some very appropriate words appearing on the scene which everyone could learn a lot from with all which is going on in the world today.
INFO
The film was first made in 1988 by Renn Producers and this DVD was released in 2005 by Song pictures Home Entertainment Inc.
The film was produced by Claude Berri and Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud.
The running time is 1 hour and 29 minutes which I feel is just the right length as there is not much talking and the majority of the film is just about watching the two bears.
The film has been given a PG certificate.
There are no extra features on the DVD just the film.
I purchased our copy from Amazon.co.uk for £4.99 which is the only place I have found it being sold and believe me I have tried almost everywhere to get this film.
I do recommend this film for all animal lovers and because of the scenery but not to be watched if you like a lot of action and talking in films.
