Advantages: Brian Wilson's best work Disadvantages: Originally released in Mono
emerge until the nineties. There are those argue that the only way to hear Pet Sounds is in its original mono format, but it is difficult to appreciate the intricacies of the arrangements without being able to seperate the sounds of the different instruments spatially. Anyone who disagrees with me should try listening to the mono version and following the melody of the harp in Wouldn't It Be Nice past the intro - impossible.
The album kicks off with Wouldn't It Be Nice, one of the most relentlessly upbeat songs you will ever here. Like much of the BeachBoys previous music the subject matter is high school love. The boy and the girl are not considered old enough by the outside world to "say good night and stay together", so all they can do is think of how great things would be "if we were older". Ultimately, theirs is a great situation ...
Advantages: Great sound, sturdy, easy to use Disadvantages: Only runs off mains power
Before I got my iPod and sounddock, I was one of those who refuses to subscribe to the technological revolution. Prefering hi-fi and compact disc to the digital music phenomenon. However, within a week (once I'd worked out how to use it), I was hooked on my iPod and once I got the sound-dock, there was no turning back. I think it's fairly safe to say that the era of compact disc players and tape decks is over... The only reason I still have a normal cd player in my house is to listen to the radio, and those few albums that I just haven't got around to putting on my iPod yet.
The Bose sound-dock is a piece of mastery in the area of audio technology. Beautiful, sleek and streamlined; it's large frontal speaker provides both volume and sound quality. The music I play on the sound-dock sounds almost incomparably better than CDs ...
Advantages: A great synopsis of the band's early hits. Good value at £5 Disadvantages: At only 22 minutes long, it comes and goes all too quickly
The BeachBoys are a fascinating band: founded by a prodigal musician and his pushy father, destroyed by family hatred and drugs, and now resurrected as three separate groups.
This concert, filmed in 1964, captures the band at a time of optimism and promise. It features early classics such as 'In My Room', 'Surfin' USA' and 'Fun, Fun, Fun which illustrate the perfect balance of polished harmonies and surf rock that won them such acclaim. There are also more light-hearted songs such as 'Long Tall Texan' and 'Papa Oom-Mow Mow' that show that that band weren't afraid to laugh at themselves.
Don't expect crowd surfing or shouts of 'are you ready to rock?!' but it's a good performance all the same, made even better by DVD quality sound. There is also rather nice filler segment on 'how the BeachBoys put together a record'. It's nice ...
